Wild Streaking Ride

Well, I never … Oh my God … Absolutely it was … the most bizarre and wonderful game imaginable.

I feel privileged to have attended Wednesday’s record-breaking game between the A’s and the Kansas City Royals. Both sides played superbly and horribly. No one gave up, not the A’s in claiming their 20th straight win, nor the Royals, who came so close in their role as spoilers. Nothing was normal or predictable, as befits a never-before situation. where are the Oakland A’S fans?

On Labor Day, an inter-league

game between the Astros and Rangers

had 24,408 paid attendance, on that

same day, the hottest team on the planet

had 26,325 (and that was with

close to 10,000 tickets being sold

Depending on your perspective, the role and demands of a closer may be a piece of cake or a stressful, ulcer-causing task. Entering September it seems very rare for some of today’s big league closers to stop opposing hitters and save the game in a smooth and peaceful manner.

Was it his “I’m going to do it my way.” demeanor? or his “I thought I pitched great” comments after being knocked out after clearly pitching poorly? Maybe it was his on-field display when showed up Art Howe after he took him out of the game against the Milwaukee this year. Or was it a subtle frustration in me when Art Howe gave him the pitching responsibility in game four of the ALDS against the yankees, in which he was ineffective?
