Some more of My Thoughts on Next Year

All the comments are appreciated. Here’s some more thoughts on what must be done.

Get a regular centerfielder. Trade Terrence Long. Forget his potential I don’t think he works hard enough at his game. Sign Ray Durham he gives flexibility at second base if Ellis needs help in his second season plus he is your DH for three years. Get rid of Tam and Mecir for anything anyone will give you. Get one more established hitter to hit fifth, I mean a regular not a Dave Justice/John Jaha prayer. Preferably a left fielder. Trade Piatt, Byrnes, and Lidle for the hitter. The team doesn’t have enough confidence in them to make it work in Oakland. Get a legit backup who can catch twice per week without compromising the pitching staff. Sign a fourth starter, send Lilly to AAA to learn how to start, sign a 94 MPH righty to set up for the pen. Not a lot to ask and all within reach of this market and especially with the revenue sharing coming next year. Marty Lurie

Very straight forward–straight-to-the-jugular comments Marty. 🙂 You seem pretty disgusted with the A’s post season play also.

I don’t know what happened to Terrence. We were all rooting for him and Ramon to come out of their hitting woes, and they really never did. I do hope Durham stays, but I don’t know how willing he is if the A’s don’t assure him of the 2nd base job. Overall, I was disapponted in the on-the-field play by David Justice. Although Im sure he held court well in the clubhouse, he just didn’t produce enough.

Maybe Lilly was still on Steinbrenner’s payroll? I don’t know because he pitched as worst as I ever saw a pitcher perform in a post season series. With Lilly’s performance, the Yankees still got the last laugh this year.

All the additions or subtractions are for not, unless the A’s can simply win a best out of five series after the regular season is over. I’ts really not much to ask for–is it?

I’m sure you’re close with Art, but I’m trying to stay very objetive and neutral, but I have a few questions about his decision making.

Why put a three year ALCS drought on an ineffective pitcher as Lilly?

Why was one of the key aqcusition John Mabry’s bat not used more?

If the Twins are vulnerble to lefties, why not a fresh Rincon versus an sometimes unpredictable Koch in the ninth in Game five?

Saenz injury was huge because Piatt was the only other right handed hitting option off the bench, besides Velarde.

The bottom line is the A’s FIND WAYS to lose in postseason.

But we probably will all forget come March in AZ.

I think the A’s need to trade Ramon Hernandez for a better catcher. It seems Ramon has an attitude problem, in the fifth game with Twins he didn’t even get up to catch the pop up. I don’t see no intensity in him. Getting a better catcher would be my first priority, trading T-long would be my second one. I’m also questioning the acquisition of Lilly. Other than I do agree with your comments.

I can’t seem to let it go. I’ve heard comments that the A’s weren’t trying. How could that be? They’re athletes and naturally competitive. Did they need motivation like A.J. Pierzienski had. In his postgame interview he credited Ray Durham with the comment that the Twins were a fluke. If that’s true that was brilliant on Duram’s part. Is that what caused A.J. to have such a great series? You would think all the motivation the A’s would have needed was to picture Jason Giambi, who said he was leaving the A’s to go to a team that knew how to win, sitting on his couch watching the A’s in the world series. I guess not, and I guess Jason isn’t feeling as bad as he might have thanks to his buddies on the A’s. Susan
