A's lack last year's plate discipline
Just when you would love to agree with the sign at the Netwrok Associates Coliseum when the Yankees we’re in town that stated “Jason Who?” it’s time to evaluate how credible of a statement that is.”
Dale gives us his take on the A’s.

The Royals will name a new manager today and it won't be Ken Macha
The Kansas City Royals will name a new manager today and unfortunately, A’s bench coach Ken Macha is not in the running.
Sources say that the A’s denied Kansas City permission to interview Macha just as they did when Boston asked to talk to Macha during the first week of spring training about their vacant managerial position.
For the 51 year old Macha, a thirty year veteran in professional baseball, being denied permission to interview for a major league manager’s job, has prevented him from reaching his dream job.
Somehow this doesn’t seem fair.

A's are not the only team juggling their line up
Losses in May breed frustration among major league managers.
It’s too early to start trading players, but not too early to move your own players up and down the lineup looking for the right fit.
Just ask Art Howe and Jerry Manuel. [Read more →]

TALKIN' BASEBALL
THROUGH THE WINDOWS OF MY MIND
BY ALAN GOLDFARB

When I was a boy growing up in Brooklyn, I spent half my life — or so it seemed — at Ebbets Field. Someone asked me the other day, how many games did I attend? I earnestly tried to remember. It was probably 10 games a season, some of which were doubleheaders (yes they played two games, in those days, usually on Sundays. See: Ernie Banks). [Read more →]

Mark Mulder returns from DL
The Athletics felt a lot better about their chances when Mark Mulder took the hill last night against the Toronto Blue Jays.
After watching him pitch into the fifth inning, losing 6-2, one has to wonder whether or not the big lefty is over his forearm miseries.
Just how did he do Friday night? [Read more →]

Are more batters being hit or is it my imagination?
Many baseball fans criticize pitchers for not pitching inside and protecting the inside part of the plate.
One way to judge whether or not pitchers are trying to reclaim this part of their sacred territory is to look at the number of batters hit by a pitched ball.
The theory being, if you hit a batter you must be throwing your pitches directly at the inside area in an attempt to move the hitter off the plate.
Are more batters being hit than last year or in years past? [Read more →]

Talent is needed, but so is hard work
Great athletes make it look easy. When you watch Barry Bonds swing a bat, it looks like anybody could do the same thing. What truly seperates the good from the great is not so much talent, but a work ethic and a dedication to pursue one’s career with a single-mindedness.
It’s as true in baseball as it is in any way of life. You can be as talented as anybody, but when you don’t apply yourself, that talent is wasted. [Read more →]

Time for Pitchers to Stand Up
As losing streaks take on a life of their own, it’s the pitcher who has to stand up and carry the team.
Today is the day for Tim Hudson to give his team a boost.
Can he look at his teammates and give them the confidence that they need to stop the rampaging Red Sox?

If the All Star team was selected today, which local players would go ?
Even though it is still early in the season, one way to judge the strength of the A’s and Giants is to speculate which players would be going to Milwaukee for the All Star game if the selections were made today.
When you think about the choices, it becomes easier to explain the success or lack thereof of both teams, over the first 32 games or so.
Let’s see.
