A Wonderful baseball moment for the granddaughter of Connie Mack

By Kathleen McGillicuddy Kelly

I was invited and honored to throw out the first pitch for the AZ Diamondback-Montreal Expo game at Bank One Ballpark on May 5, 2002. It was an exciting experience and I am happy to report, (after practicing with neighborhood children and against my backyard wall) I threw the ball across the plate to the cheers of my family and friends. The Diamondback player who caught my ball was Quentin McCracken, and I was delighted to have him sign my ball and a photo taken with him. He played a very good game that day.

What a game we had, lots of excitement! Our manager, Bob Brenly, got ejected after arguing a call at homeplate by umpire Laz Diaz. Diaz called Junior Spivey out after he attempted to score from second base on a single to right field by Mark Grace. The 40,000 fans were in a friendly uproar over it because it wasn’t even close. However, we went on to win the game. Our young relief pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim ( of not so famous World Series fame) got his eighth save of the season.

Thought you Oakland A’s fans would like to hear how things are going in Arizona these days. Have to admit I will root for the Oakland A’s in the American league and would look forward to playing you in the World Series.

Editors note: Kathleen McGillicuddy Kelly is the granddaughter of Cornelius McGillicuddy, better known as Hall Of Famer, Connie Mack. She is a wonderful baseball fan.

Thanks for your story Kathleen, from your friend, Marty Lurie

Beautiful!!! It’s wonderful to see that baseball is still in her blood. What a thrill to pitch to a member of the World Championship team.

Not only can Kathleen McGillicuddy Kelly dance (she is a former Radio City Hall Rockette), now we find out she can pitch too! Not bad Mom!

Your loving daughter,
