Starting Pitching This Year's Key To Winning

Batter Up April 8th, 2007
In baseball you can’t win a pennant without top flight pitching. In recent years it has been the vogue to build the pitching staff from the back forward. Meaning relievers to starters.
This year the best teams will be the ones with the deepest starting pitching one through five. If the starter can go six innings and turn the ball over to the relief corps with the lead, most bullpens will be able to save the day.

2007 Predictions

Batter Up April 1st, 2007
No one really knows what twists and turns a baseball season will hold. Everyone who follows the game has an opinion as to the outcome: here’s mine.
Pitching and defense still are the two most important factors to consider when looking for a potential champion.
Strong starting pitching is essential, but a strong bull pen is critical to success over the course of the 162 game season.
The American League West promises to be a race to the finish similar to last year when the A’s outlasted the Angels.

A Rod Won't Be in NY Next Season

Batter Up March 25, 2007
Mesa, Arizona
Take a good look at Alex Rodriguez in a Yankee uniform this season. He won’t be back in the Bronx next year.
With A Rod challenging the tough New York fans to show him love before he decides whether or not to opt out of the remaining years of his contract, he is all but gone.
Advice to Alex: Don’t mess with the fans in New York, it’s a battle you won’t win.
A Rod’s agent Scott Boras rolled the dice with JD Drew in Los Angeles in a similar situation getting Drew a more lucrative multi year deal with the Red Sox. Look for Boras to guide Rodriguez to the Angels, Giants, or Cubs in ’08.

Spring Training Baseball's Gift To All

Batter Up March 18th, 2007
Mesa, Arizona.

Spring training is baseball’s gift to the fans. The wins and losses don’t matter. The weather is spectacular. The players all smile. The only thing that counts is getting in shape for the season.
More importantly the story has already begun for the fans in 2007.

Fans Dictate Decision on Bonds

If you shell out $50-100 bucks every time you buy a ticket to a Giants game you want to see Barry Bonds play in San Francisco.

It’s very easy for the media to criticize the decision to bring Bonds back to the Giants in ’07. Most of us in the media don’t have time for Bonds and his negative aura. He is the most difficult person to work with in baseball today.

Is he any different with the press than Joe Dimaggio was or Willie Mays or Ted Williams? Probably worse but not by much.

In reality the fans who buy the tickets to the game want to see Bonds play.

If you go to a Giants game there is still the buzz when Bonds comes up. He puts fans in the seats and will do so in 2007 and that’s the reason he is back with the Giants.

Moises Alou was a nice player. Hurt quite a bit, but a productive player. Does anyone give a hoot that he is long gone and with the Mets next season?

Absolutely not. The fans could care less and that’s why the Giants hardly blinked whern he left. His departure will have absolutley no impact on ticket sales.

If Bonds left town you can bet that there would be plenty of empty seats at the park.

Money talks and the fans money is what brought Bonds back pure and simple.

Wednesday Is The Day Things Happen at The Winter Meetings

History tells us that things at the winter meetings usually heat up on the next to last day.

Forget big trades, they are a thing of the past. The winter meetings are now solely the time for the agents and their clients to corner the baseball world in a small space such as the lobby or bar of the hotel housing the meetings and make their deals.

Wednesday should see Mike Piazza become an Athletic. Can’t see Piazza going from LA to NY and then to Texas to end his career. Oakland and the Bay Area area are better fit. Piazza isn’t the hitter Frank Thomas is so the A’s should beware of a two year deal.

At the trade deadline last year I suggested the A’s trade Joe Blanton and Mark Ellis for Lastings Milledge, Mike Pelfrey, and Aaron Heilman.

Mets fans screamed "Absurd".

Now it looks like some part of that deal might happen with pitcher John Maine possibly replacing Heilman since the Mets are desperate for middle relief.

I like the potential move because Nick Swisher should stay at 1B and not be moved back to the outfield. Milledge and Milton Bradley would make things pretty lively in the clubhouse.

It's Only Baseball

Thanks to Alma for rescuing the site once again from the hackers. I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would take the time to hack into the site and effectively disrupt the flow of information. But this is the world we live in today and the lack of respect is disappointing. So we can’t post any audio and the stories look funny. We are in the process of changing things around so please bear with us. When these disruptions occur the server has no choice but to take us off line. In the meantime the A’s have a new manager. No big surprise here. More importantly the team needs a new DH. Frank Thomas was going to test the market. That was obvious once he didn’t accept the two year offer extended in October. Names bandied about: Moises Alou, Preston Wilson, Barry Bonds. No way Bonds comes to Oakland. The Giants can’t let it happen and Bonds will get his money from SF. Don’t expect to see Willie Mays hanging around the A’s clubhouse. More than likely the A’s will send Nick Swisher back to the outfield and give Dan Johnson a shot at first base. I still think Kotsay and Loaiza should be shopped for a younger hitter. Tony DeFrancesco should be promoted from Sacramento to the A’s coaching staff. Minor league hitting instructor Greg Sparks should get the job as hitting coach. The Red Sox will sign Matsuzaka and have an excellent rotation if Jonathan Papaelbon is healthy. The Arizona Fall League should be on your travel calendar. Great weather good baseball and small crowds. Phoenix won the title again today beating some Ranger, Oriole, Pirate, and Rockie farmhands 6-2. Zito will end up in NY with Rick Peterson. Jason Schmidt most likely in Seattle. Ted Lilly could sign with the Yankees. The Cubs made good moves with Ramirez and DeRosa. Padilla has a market and will get a good contract. Angels are desperate for a hitter and more than likely will have to make a trade because Soriano looks like a good bet to go somewhere else. White Sox want to trade Freddy Garcia. Yanks are interested and don’t need Melky Cabrera. Big disappointment with the website. It’s even hard to write this article because the spacing isn’t working at all while I type. So enjoy the day and I’ll write more once we figure out how to proceed. By the way if you know a web programmer who really knows his or her stuff I’m interested because we need someone to help us figure out how to get the site back to full speed. Thanks,Marty [Read more →]

Lost in Translation

With all the turmoil at the end of the A’s season the fact that the team had an excellent season was lost.

Instead of celebrating a trip to the ALCS, the focus turned to other matters.

How did the team do in 2006?

Let’s take a look. Click below for more! [Read more →]

Tigers in Three, No Make That Four!

Much has transpired since last Sunday.

The Tigers now know they will face the Cardinals in the World Series.

The A’s fired their two-time AL West Division winning manager Ken Macha.

Let’s start with the Tigers. Detroit completely outplayed the Yankees and the A’s on their way to the AL pennant. The Cardinals rode the arms of Jeff Suppan, Chris Carpenter, Jeff Weaver, and Adam Wainwright to the NL flag.

Power pitching is the key to October success. With Kenny Rogers, as Eric Byrnes said on the Fox pre-game show, possessed, the Tigers should breeze through the series in four games behind their dominant pitching staff.
