And down the strech they come….

Around 38 games left for all
teams including the Mariners
and the Athletics and I have
a feeling this is going to
be decided the last three
games of the season here
at Safeco Field.

Giants Find No Relief From Losing Ways in Montreal
Marty; You call it the road trip from hell and that says it all. The only bright spot is the quote from Schmidt to the effect that there is nothing wrong with his arm, just the eleven day inactivity thet resulted in the poor performance. One can only hope he is not whistling in the dark.
Writing about the Giants today is not the easy task it has been all year long.
Ed Stern has been analyzing the Giants chances all season long, today he explains the current state of the team.
Thanks, Ed,

The Giants Target, The Playoffs; The Objective, Clinch Early.
With only 45 games to play and an eleven game lead over the nearest club, the team still has a major incentive. If they continue to maintain roughly the same lead over Arizona and LA as they have today they will be able to clinch the playoff spot ten games or so before the season ends. Having in mind that in the last ten games of the year they play LA seven times, this is a very important consideration.
Ed Stern’s Analysis is sound the only thing in his way are the thrty five games over the next seven weeks of the season, they have to be played.

The Giants:Can the Sum be Greater Than the Parts? by Ed Stern.
In this Sunday’s New York Times it becomes clear that the question which has intrigued and bedevilled the teams’s followers since the start of the season, why does this team win, is being asked in places other than San Francisco. The answer to the question, however, is no more apparent to the New York sportswriter, Jack Curry, than it has been to those of us who have been following the team through it’s first 116 games. Curry defines the team as “the sum is greater than the parts San Francisco Giants” and takes off from that premise.

Giants won the West

It is over in the National League
West. The San Francisco Giants
have won it. The Arizona Diamond-
backs have seven games left
with the Giants and the
Los Angeles Dodgers six.
Both teams will have to beat
the Giants in all those games
and then play .800 ball to be
there tied with Giants at
end of September.
And yes, at the same time
the Giants would have to
collapse. What are the
chances ? Easier for
Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown
to announce next week
the building of a new ballpark
in downtown Oakland for the
A’S.

Sabean: Winning it all, right now, the only objective.
Four days out of town with no opportunity to watch some uncharacteristic performances by the Giants. Before leaving town, however, word of the Ponson trade hit the news wires. Ponson, from the accounts one reads of his performance this year with Baltimore, is an accomplished pitcher who should occupy the number two spot in the rotation and eat up the innings. The Giants can use a pitcher who meets that description. The team has a 12 game lead in a division that for the past month has provided no opposition. What we are talking about, therefore, are the playoffs.
Click Below for Ed Stern’s analysis of the current state of his favorite team. With a Bay Bridge Series a distinct possibility this season, Ed’s thoughts are much appreciated by AL fans…… Marty Lurie [Read more →]

MEMORIES MAKE THE GAME SPECIAL BY BRUCE MACGOWAN
ONE OF THE GREAT PLEASURES OF WORKING IN THE MEDIA IS THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK BASEBALL ON A DAILY BASIS IN THE PRESS BOX WITH OTHER WRITERS, BROADCASTERS, SCOUTS AND FRONT OFFICE FOLKS. NO OTHER SPORT SEEMS TO LEND ITSELF TO THE KIND OF TALK WE HAVE IN BASEBALL DURING AND BEFORE A GAME, AND THAT IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY YOU HAVE TO ENJOY BEING AROUND THE PARK SO MUCH.

After Bonds Throws Out the Leading Run, Then Homers to Win Game, What Next ?
Marty; Before the series with Arizona started this week the thought was that one should await the outcome of the four games before drawing any conclusions respecting their significance. However, after watching the first three games, one doesn’t feel the need to await today’s result ( just FYI, the Giants swept Arizona behind an amazing day by Barry Bonds) to draw conclusions. From the beginning of the year the question was asked, why does this Giant ballclub keep on winning, why are they ten games in front of Arizona and eleven and a half ahead of LA with sixty games left to play? We received an answer, finally, this week, from an authoritative source, Curt Schilling.

Roger Angell, Author Who Throws Strikes by Ed Stern
Marty; You mentioned today that good pitching requires the throwing of strikes. In that respect, I call your attention to the recent publication of Roger Angell’s collection of articles from the New Yorker, going back twenty five or more years. The most perceptive writing about the great game that I have read.
