The Innocent World of Baseball by Ed Stern
Marty: I started to write a comment to your article today but it became too lengthy and began to look more like an article. However, I am thinking of doing an article addressing the entire season before the playoffs begin.
Here are my initial thoughts on the postseason.

Felipe Alou has not Changed: He is on Top Once Again.

I remember when I first
talked to Alou, when he was
a player and now
as a manager. The man has
not changed (aside from his age)
-and we all do there-.
Felipe is the same
astute baseball man presently
running the Giants on the field.
as he was as a young player
with the Giants in 1958, with
much more knowledge, of
course.

The Giants: A Mortal Lock to Play in October by Ed Stern
Twenty one games left to play and the Giants have an eleven game lead. Is there anything remaining to write about before the playoffs begin? Let’s give it a try. Marty writes this morning, “Other than the Giants and the Braves no other teams are mortal locks to get to play in October.” When this season started, if one was asked who the “mortal locks” would be in October, one could reasonably have answered the Braves and the Yankees. If pushed a bit further, in answer to a question respecting who were likely to be playing in October even though not a ” mortal lock”, a reasonable response might have been the Red Sox, possibly the A’s, possibly the Giants, simply because of the mediocre opposition in their division, the Cards, Seattle, or any one of a grab bag of aspiring teams. No one in their right mind would have called the Giants a “mortal lock”.

The Giants, Bonds and Atrial Fibrillation by Ed Stern
Barry Bonds was back playing ball yesterday and, in what has become a typical fashion, provided the hit that won the game in late innings. This morning’s Chronicle devoted most of it’s story on the Giants to an interview with Bonds in which he described the physical symptoms which led to his overnight hospitalization, his reaction to what he was told by doctors treating him, and included a statement by trainer, Stan Conte, to the effect that Bonds “doesn’t need medication but will continue to be monitored and see a Bay Area cardiologist this week.”
Continue Below for more of Ed’s excellent perspective on this situation. [Read more →]

Why are the Giants #1 in the Bay Area ?

After all these years since they
have been playing in San Francisco
(1958)without a World Championship
compared to four (4) for the Oakland
Athletics, who got here 10 years
later, why are the San Francisco
Giants the Bay Area’s favorite
baseball team ?

Old teams in first place: Giants and Seattle

The Seattle Mariners and the
San Francisco Giants are two
of the oldest teams (player ages) in the Major
Leagues. For that matter
Felipe Alou of the Giants and
Jack McKeon of the Marlins
are the two oldest managers
in baseball and both have their
teams in great shape.
What does that says for the
gang over 40 ?
Good news !

Bonds and Giants' Pitching May Be Enough by Ed Stern
Marty- After that road trip from hell, the Giants come back and sweep Atlanta. It says something about the character of the team. The heart of this club is Barry, a very strong bullpen, despite Worrell’s recent struggles, and two starters, Schmidt and Ponson, who are better than any other duo in the league. They remain ten losing games in front of the opposition with the season rapidly coming to a close. The team has problems, as do most teams at this stage of the season. Their injury list doesn’t seem to be diminishing.
