The Trade That Ended the Season by Ed Stern

Marty, This is being written the morning after the ninth inning. It is still not known how today’s games play out. The likelihood is that the season is over for the Giants today but it matters litttle. No matter how today’s games end, the season is over. The Giants will not be successful in a playoff, if, by some unlikely scenario, they get that far. This season’s last column is not premature.

Three Games With the Season On the Line by Ed Stern

Marty, One hundred and fifty -nine games behind them; a long stretch which has seen the team go from despair, with a pitching staff, both starters and bullpen, in disrepair, to cautious optimism, wondering how a team with such obvious flaws remains in contention.

Giants' Playoff Prospects by Ed Stern
Marty; There are 15 games remaining to be played, three with the Astros, and 6 each with LA and the Padres. The Giants are a half game in front of the Cubs, 2 ahead of Houston and 3 and 3 and 1/2 ahead of the rapidly failing Padres and Marlins.

Ichiro: The Hit Machine

Like the great Jack Buck once said
“I cannot believe what I have just
seen”.
Ichiro Susuki is the best leadoff
hitter I have ever seen. And I
covered Rickey Henderson’s
career since he was a rookie
for the Oakland A’S in 1979
throught most of his glory
years. But if a leadoff hitter
job is to get on base, Ichiro
does it better than anybody
else.

The Giants Farm System; Sabean's Response by Ed Stern
Marty, This morning’s daily newspaper contains a very lengthy article in which “Sabean makes the most of maligned farm system.” It is questionable whether Sabean has a good case. The team’s basic position is that they have been contenders for the top spot for many years. It is argued by him that this fact, standing alone, is sufficient rebuttal to those who contend that times have changed, that a productive farm system is necessary for continued success and that the Giants have been successful these past three or four years largely due to the presence of Barry Bonds.

Giants Wild Card Fight, Despite Pitching Shambles by Ed Stern
Marty; It has been frequently said that pitching is 90% of the game. If this truism is to be honored, why are the Giants in the middle of a struggle for the wild card slot in the playoffs? Was there ever a team, with a pitching staff in such disarray, with 39 games left to play, realistically competing for an October prize?

From Cuba With Talent

Kendry Morales defected
Cuba this past June
along with 18 other Cubans
in a man-made raft
that arrived safely
in US territory.
Today many Major
League teams are
after his services.
Unlike other Cubans that
have arrived in the same
fashion there is little
doubt about Morales age.
