Marty Lurie Talks San Francisco Giants Baseball
//

Winter Meetings Need Armored Truck

One thing I don’t do is worry about how much money billionaires should spend on their baseball teams.

These folks are not in the same world with the rest of us working for a living on a daily basis.

Baseball owners think about flying to Paris, that’s France, not Texas, for lunch.

Let them throw around their millions for ball players. All I’m interested in is how the team will play next season.

I don’t care if Barry Zito is worth 10 mil per year or 15 mil, just tell me where he is going to pitch in ’07.

Ball clubs set arbitrary payroll limits. They all make money, people are falling all over each other buying ball clubs once they hit the market.

It’s just a matter of how little money a club can spend to keep the turnstiles moving and keep the people who pay the bills interested. Those people being fans plus the television folks, cable and national who really line the owners pockets.

If the Giants really want Barry Bonds they can afford it. Haven’t heard of Peter Magowan not buying a new flat screen television because of the money he might have to spend on Bonds.

Click below for more!If the Red Sox really want JD Drew in their outfield instead of Manny Ramirez, they are in for trouble. I think they will end up with both which is the way to go.

Julio Lugo, can you believe he is considered a savior for the Mets, Red Sox, Cubs, or Mariners. Who cares about the price tag what’s he ever done.

Ted Lilly, Vincente Padilla, Gil Meche. They all disappointed their teams last season at various times. Add them to your roster and you have more of the same regardless of cost.

Jeff Weaver, Jason Marquis, Jeff Suppan, all back of the rotation pitchers who won’t give anyone a pennant no matter how much they cost.

Alfonso Soriano can hit. Jason Schmidt can pitch. Daisuke Matsuzaka can pitch. These players can make a difference.

Zito certainly would help Texas, the Mets, or the Dodgers.

Jay Payton would help Texas, the A’s, and the Mariners or Cubs. Trade for Miguel Tejada now that’s a move that could change things in the West if the Angels got him.

Freddy Garcia or Javier Vazquez would help the Rangers or the Mets. All the relievers (Baez, Bradford, Walker) signed by the Orioles will help them, the price not withstanding these guys can get outs late in the game.

Sheffield will clearly help the Tigers. Gary Matthews will catch the ball in Anaheim, the biggest weakness last season on the Angels was defense.

Justin Speier will take some innings from Scott Shields which is good for Anaheim.

Cost isn’t relevant. Don’t be blinded by the price tags, it’s who they are and how fit that which is the key.

Mike Mussina back in NY is good for the Yankees. He is still a seven inning pitcher and in today’s world that’s huge.

Mike Piazza can help the A’s. He isn’t Frank Thomas a man who had much to prove. Piazza is not known for helping teammates or arriving early to the game. He can hit righthanded and if the A’s don’t bring Jay Payton back Piazza is worth the gamble because the A’s glaring weakness is a proven hitter who can scare the pitcher.

The Rangers need starting pitching. They should let the kids pitch, they have three ready to make the jump. It’s better than four years of the 4 and 5 starters who are out there.

The Giants will sign Bonds simply because they can’t afford to let him play any where else. Go ahead and sign him already. Ray Durham, Pedro Feliz, Omar Vizquel, Rich Aurilia, Dave Roberts (who is a terrific baseball player by the way) means more of the same next season in SF.

Give me Miguel Batista he can make a difference in someone’s pen. The Giants for sure.

Bengie Molina will have something to prove. A good pick up.

Carlos Lee is a huge question mark. Just wait until you really need him in the clutch. Let’s see if he’s a winner in Houston. He might be OK but more than likely will be a bust.

Forget the money it’s who the player really is. The owners have the dough, let them play all the cat and mouse games and cry the blues. They can all afford any player on the market if they really want to bring him onto the team. It’s how little they can spend and still rake in the dough from those who pay the bills.

For some reason we are brainwashed that the next dollar spent by a club will send the owners to the local finance company for help.

Don’t buy it. They have the money. How about 51 million to talk to Matsusaka?

Young players, trades, and an occasional free agent who really can make a difference is they way to go.

This week the money will be thrown at pitchers who are mediocre at best. Good for them.

Just don’t think Gil Meche, Ted Lilly, or Vincente Padilla will be any better just because they get 10 mil per year.

How about the Mets? El Duque their number two starter? Now they will consider trading Lastings Milledge for pitching help. Should have done it last summer when they needed a real starter. Oliver Perez, Brian Bannister maybe but they need Zito for their rotation.

Mark Mulder might help someone in ’08. Remember he was getting rocked even before the injury got worse last season.

Tim Hudson. He needs a change of scenery. Atlanta doesn’t have confidence in him. Orioles or Texas worth the gamble.

Frank Thomas. Toronto over Oakland? Does he need the money that much? He was awesome last season seemed happy too. He will help Toronto and is worth having a 39 year old DH who can’t run because his at bats were something to see.

The A’s don’t need much other than a return to health for just about every key player on the team.

I like the idea of Alan Embree in the Oakland pen. He still throws 95 and that will be a positive change in the eighth inning.

Is Jay Witasick still on the team?

Luis Gonzalez a DH in Seattle? I’d rather have Jose Guillen.

Give me Carl Crawford or Rocco Baldelli before any of these free agent pitchers.

Real GMs will make trades this week.

The only key free agents still out there are Zito and Schmidt everone else is window dressing. If what is left on the club doesn’t come through these other free agents won’t matter one bit.

Baseball has the money. Never feel sorry for these owners they are smiling all the way to the bank.

Marty

If Matt Cain matures, Noah Lowry learns how to pitch and Matt Morris learns how to pitch in ATT then things might look up in SF.

Marty – Great column. Loved the attitde re the owners and their "problems" As you say, for some reason some fans identify with them. It’s unbelievable! These days there are Moneyball-type fans who would rather talk about VORPs (what is that?) and win shares and trading salary for such than who can go get ’em in the gap or who has got the best curve ball. And thanks for the update on the player moves and possibilities (and, again, the disdain for the owners specious money problems), although I will probably be waiting, once again, until Opening Day to try to find out who is on the Red Sox or the Cubs.

Marty,

Great column! You’re completely right about the money!!

I covet Crawford, but Baldelli would be more than welcome. I think the A’s have some serious question marks regarding health. Harden and Kotsay worry me the most, but so do Chavez and Crosby. They’re going to miss Zito’s 200+ innings and never missing a start (and not too shabby a w/l record or ERA either).
