Bonds and Nixon, Two of a Kind

Batter Up August 12th, 2007
Baseball has a mystical side for me. I’ve long felt that the spirit of former players is transferred to the players currently playing the game. It’s the way baseball connects from generation to generation.
Here are some players whose careers are linked together; Rod Carew and Ichiro; Ty Cobb and Pete Rose; Lefty Grove and Randy Johnson; Stan Musial and George Brett; Josh Gibson and Roy Campanella; Jimmie Foxx and Harmon Killebrew; and Duke Snider and Reggie Jackson.
The next coupling hit me this week as I watched all the hoopla surrounding Barry Bonds. Click Below for More!

Best Player in the Game Today?

Batter up August 5th, 2007
Baseball is a talking sport. Debates about players can quickly lead to heated arguments.
For instance, if you were starting a team today who would be the first player chosen for your mythical team based upon 2007 performance.
Some scouts, general managers, broadcasters, and managers discussed this question the other day. Their answers, filled with emotion and conviction, ranged all over the field.
Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer got the most support. Mauer plays a key position on the diamond, hits for power plus average, and is a team leader.

Has the Media Gone Overboard ?George Borges Answers SI's Reilly

ok Rick, you’ve finally managed to push me over the top…have been wanting to scream at the top of my lungs for a long time at the sick (not sick the way my 11 y/o daughter uses the word, but sick as in mentally disturbed) obsession you and a great many of your colleagues have with bonds – however, having a life (job, family, playing ball, attending and enjoying sporting events, etc.) and not really knowing how to type has discouraged me from taking the time to respond to the volumes of venom you and those of your ilk have been gleefully spewing forth for such a long period of time …but, as the hit pieces keep coming, well, let’s just touch on some things, not necessarily in order of importance, that should be noted.
George Borges responds to Sports Illustrated’s Rick Reilly’s column about Barry Bonds. George is a lawyer in San Francisco and an avid basketball player who can still hit a fade away jump shot.

August and September; Two Distinct Months

Batter Up July 29th 2007
The two most unique months of the baseball season are August and September.
In August, the grinders take over. These players come to play hard every day. They do the little things to win ball games. In September the pros take over. These players excel under pressure. These players become the MVPs. The pros become the legends of the game.
No matter what trades are made over the next few days the grinders will be key for the contenders this month.

'07 All Stars Quite Impressive

Batter Up July 22nd, 2007
The All-Star game in San Francisco was a showcase for the best players in the game this season. How many of the players on this year’s roster will eventually be elected to the Hall of Fame?
In 1971 the All Star game was one of the most star studded of all time. The game featured 19 future Hall of Fame members including Frank and Brooks Robinson, Luis Aparicio, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Reggie Jackson, Johnny Bench, Jim Palmer and Juan Marichal among others.
Last week’s game won’t match the ’71 game for all time greats, but time will show that at least 12 future HOF’s were there.
Here’s my list of players from the ’07 game who surely are headed to Cooperstown.

The Long View: Earthquake Warning

This one’s not strictly about baseball. But if you want to learn more about the A’s – top-down, or inside-out – it’s valuable to know. Lew Wolff and his insatiable South Bay real estate dealings are again involved – as are, according to some reports, A’s President Michael Crowley and even another guy who knows a good buy when he sees one, A’s General Manager Billy Beane.

While that last connection remains tenuous, it’s a good indicator of why, as an A’s fan, this should interest you – even if you like your ball no bigger than a Golden Delicious. [Read more →]
