THOSE OLDIES BUT GOODIES
Charlie Danrick writes: Hello baseball fans and here’s hoping you’re all girding up for another super year rooting for your favorites. May I add that something’s coming your way that will not only enhance the season but provide thrills from the past? Plus ,after the season ends you’ll not only have the chance of reliving it by downloading all games from 2002 off MLB.com but likewise archival radio broadcasts that will enable you to hear games called by the greats in the radio booths such as Red Barber, Mel Allen, Harry Carey, Herb Score, Russ Hodges and REAL ‘30s pioneers such as Tom Manning and Ty Tyson just to mention a few. You’ll be taken back to Ebbets Field ; Forbes with Greenberg Gardens in left; to the Polo Grounds, that horseshoe shaped palace of thrills in which the great Willie Mays stood the game on its ear and to Yankee Stadium, the House that Ruth built and excellence maintained.
You will be able to re-live hearing the crack of the bats of the Duke of Flatbush, Mickey, Joe “D,†Stan the Man, Willie, “Teddy Baseball,†Ernie “Let’s Play Two,†and more than time will allow to mention. For the very first time on the Internet, Major League Baseball will be offering its momentous memories in sound. Actual games of the past for you to download and thoroughly enjoy. How do I know? Because I’m proud to state that I pioneered the concept of offering Major League Baseball 365 days a year by way of having sold the cassette tapes of the actual games through Danrick Enterprises since the mid ‘80s and finally have sold the business to the Internet Division of Major League Baseball, Major League Baseball Advanced Media, MLB.com/.
It was indeed a pleasure having visited and met with certain people at MLB.com so give me a few minutes to tell you about it. The company not only maintains, updates and polishes it’s own website, the official site of Major League Baseball, but as well, the sites of each club. A gigantic task to say the least but these young people at the helm are more than capable. Whoever doesn’t believe that the lifeblood of the Internet is not controlled by youth is wrong. I bear witness to it; it was the first thing I noticed as I walked off the elevator to meet with the prospective buyers. First I was overwhelmed by the spaciousness of the work area, offices and high tech equipment but then over –overwhelmed by those with whom I would negotiate. “I must be in the wrong place†I thought as I was greeted. The greeter had to be 15 years old. Everywhere I looked I saw “kids.†Was I at MLB.com or the studios of “Sesame Street?†Being taken back by what I was seeing is an understatement but make no mistake about it; the youth I encountered were more than suited for their respective jobs. The professionalism of each were outstanding and I want to thank them for making me, “Gramps,†feel at home. Tracy Walsh, the Director of Business Development; Marjorie Adams, the Vice President of Business Development and Andy Roth, the Producer of MLB radio.
For those of you who go to my website www.baseballtapes.com and find an immediate redirect to a page on MLB.com/, I recommened you fill in, on that page, your e-mail address and the company will keep you updated on their archival games online. If you have any questions about my games now belonging to MLB.com/, feel free to call toll free 866-800-1275. Finally I’d like to thank Marty Lurie for granting me permission to present this article on his website.
The best to you all and root, root root for the home team,
Charlie Danrick
