Bonds Represents More Than Home Runs
It’s not just the specter of using steroids that has turned public opinion against Barry Bonds.
It’s not simply the idea that Bonds will pass the home run total of one of the great icons of American sports, the legendary Babe Ruth.
The real reason for the negative feelings is what Barry Bonds represents.

Barry Bonds is a laboratory experiment. The evidence is overwhelming that Bonds and his super baseball power is not completely god-given.
Until the steroid era began baseball players were finely conditioned athletes who had the extraordinary ability to squarely hit a ball thrown at speeds of 95 MPH with a round bat.
It’s the toughest challenge in sports.
The stars we idolized to name a few included Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle, Frank Robinson, Reggie Jackson, Duke Snider, Sandy Koufax, Harmon Killebrew, Frank Howard, Hank Greenberg, Lou Gehrig, and Willie Mays.
They typified the best athletes in our high schools, colleges, and the playgrounds.
They came to spring training after a cold winter ready to get into playing shape.
These players didn’t spend the winter taking blood tests, getting injections, or having consultations with nefarious characters on the fringe of the chemical bodybuilding world.
They didn’t hire trainers to help figure ways to foil a drug test.
They set all time baseball records using their own natural ability. Sure players are bigger and stronger today. But no one is accusing any of the greats of the game of having used illegal body building supplements to hit home runs or strike hitters out.
Bonds is the best players of the lab rats.
Bonds is taking the heat for players who used illegal supplements. Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco, and Rafael Palmiero included.
Baseball has always fascinated the public. Its stars revered and lionized. We understand the game. Baseball was the game played at picnics, in the backyard, or at the beach.
Bonds’s godfather Willie Mays, who today can barely defend his godson in the press, came to New York City as a NL rookie in 1951. The Say Hey Kid played stickball in the streets of Harlem after starring that day on the diamond in the Polo Grounds.
There is innocence in baseball that transcends the wins and losses.
All the lying and cheating that has permeated the game during the steroid era threatens the purity that baseball has in our hearts.
Bonds reminds me of a science fiction character that has wires and gadgets under his skin rather than muscle and bones.
The sad end to the story is Bonds could have been one of the greatest to ever play the game without the chemicals.
Instead he chose to become a futuristic TurboMan, eschewing his normal baseball gifts in the process.
And that’s why he’ll never be recognized as the greatest player who ever stepped between the lines.
The real story is the sad fact that his incredible baseball prowess is the creation of a mad scientist in a laboratory.
That’s what hitting 715 represents to me.
And to me that’s just not acceptable.
Rumors are already circulating that the A’s might be interested if Bonds chooses to play next season in the American League as a designated hitter.
I don’t buy it. Wasn’t there a play written about a player who sells his soul to the devil so he can have stardom in the majors. Wasn’t his name Joe Hardy. This A’s team has built its success around clubhouse chemistry. Bringing Bonds to Oakland highlights a different type of chemistry.
Eric Chavez indicated he would favorably consider the notion of having Bonds on the A’s next season. The idea being that the A’s would be adding Babe Ruth to its lineup.
I’d say that the A’s third baseman has a better chance of playing on the same team with the long departed Ruth in a fantasy league than actually having the disruptive Bonds and his sideshow in Oakland.
Bonds should retire from baseball and run for governor.

Marty: I’m in complete agreement. Assuming the Giants refuse to have anything further to do with Bonds, at the end of this season, it would be simple justice if every other team, including the DH teams in the American League, took the same position. Leave Bonds twisting slowly in the wind, all alone with no place to go.
