Doubleheader Part Of Nation's Celebration

Batter Up June 3rd, 2007
Baseball has been part of the cultural landscape of America for over one hundred years. Going to a doubleheader on Memorial Day, July 4th, or Labor Day was a welcome family event. Over the past fifteen years or so, the baseball leaders eliminated the traditional holiday doubleheaders (two games back-to-back, one admission) from the schedule. Now some teams don’t even play on the holidays.
How come? Baseball doesn’t want to give up the gate by scheduling two games for the price of one. Yet Bud Selig tells us this 5 billion dollar a year industry is in its golden age. Baseball has its own 700 million dollar cable deals. Attendance and salaries have never been higher.
The loss of revenue from playing a doubleheader is miniscule in baseball’s grand financial picture. It’s time to give the joy of seeing two games in one day (not a day-night affair) back to the fans.
Baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie, the phrase became America’s slogan when referring to the grand old game. Apparently, munching on hot dogs celebrating the national pastime at a doubleheader on a National holiday is not part of that pastoral summer picture.

Texas manager Ron Washington has seen the 2007 Rangers long enough to know that his club needs an extreme makeover. The Rangers must clean house. All-star first baseman Mark Teixeira is available. The slugger is a free agent after the 2008 season. He won’t be in Texas much longer.
Current Tiger first sacker Sean Casey has little power. Multiple injuries have slowed the Tiger’s chances of repeating as AL pennant winners. The Tigers have quality minor leaguers waiting for a chance. Lefty Andrew Miller will be a star. Outfielder Cameron Maybin is another highly regarded Tiger farmhand. Teixeira to Detroit just might be enough to hold off the Twins and Indians until the injured Tiger players return.
Texas’s Akinori Otsuka is a reliable eighth inning set up man. The Cubs have many problems in the clubhouse, but can win the NL Central if they straighten out their bullpen. Otsuka and center fielder Kenny Lofton to Chicago for outfielder Matt Murton, plus pitchers Angel Guzman and Carlos Marmol would lower Cub skipper Lou Piniella’s blood pressure.
The Giants need a veteran closer to anchor their ‘pen. With a starting rotation that ranks with the best in the NL, a closer who has been through the pressure of a pennant race will help keep the Giants in the race. GM Brian Sabean should make an offer to the Rangers for Eric Gagne. The former Dodger still has the stuff to make big league hitters look silly.
Give Washington young players he can teach and he’ll bring the Rangers back to respectability.
Until then, Texas is the worst team in the league.

Baseball is fun again in Seattle. Even though the Mariners lack reliable starting pitching, the hitters are crushing the ball one through nine. Give Seattle a lead in the eighth inning and they are tough to beat. Rookie set up man and former Cal pitcher Brandon Morrow dares the hitters to hit his 97 mph fastball. Lefty George Sherill has been lights out. Closer JJ Putz is an all star.
Seattle still swings at everything, but they are making contact and scoring enough runs to open some eyes around the league.
Pitcher Felix Hernandez is the key. If “King Felix” regains his early season form Seattle will hang around in the AL West.

Next up for a fire sale: The Chicago White Sox beginning with manager Ozzie Guillen. I expect to see lefty Mark Buehrle and outfielder Jermaine Dye follow Guillen out of the Windy City before July 31st.

while baseball ignoring the doubleheader is bad, on a related topic why are 6 MLB teams off on Memorial Day?…NYC ,Washington D.C. and Philadelphia all historical cities w/ no baseball that day!…MLB does a fine job on Mothers Day with the pink bats and breast cancer awareness, but two weeks later to not do something to honor the individuals who made great sacrifices on a holiday not many people have knowledge of is mind-boggling…how about Memorial Day baseball with proceeds/donations going to veteran groups or Strikeout For Troops?….P.S. you can be for this idea and still not like the current situation in Iraq

I absolutely agree. There should be a doubleheader scheduled three times per year on the major holidays and baseball should celebrate the day with everyone else. Not to play on Memorial Day or July 4th is just plain wrong,

I think a solution which might be agreeable to most parties would be to have a split-game doubleheader on the "Big 3" holidays. Yes, it’s not perfect, but can you imagine how many games would be on television those days? Just as long as FOX didn’t try to get exclusive rights……

If looking for a cloth that you wear during the summer nights, it is something that breathes and does not require very heavy. The Pure Pashmina Wrap Mango ring style is clean and fresh. Its like a warm, sunny day, great and your sun away from you, or at night when the temperature drops only a few degrees. Since the scarf is so delicate, it stuck to your skin and feels light as a feather.,
