'07 All Stars Quite Impressive

Batter Up July 22nd, 2007
The All-Star game in San Francisco was a showcase for the best players in the game this season. How many of the players on this year’s roster will eventually be elected to the Hall of Fame?
In 1971 the All Star game was one of the most star studded of all time. The game featured 19 future Hall of Fame members including Frank and Brooks Robinson, Luis Aparicio, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Reggie Jackson, Johnny Bench, Jim Palmer and Juan Marichal among others.
Last week’s game won’t match the ’71 game for all time greats, but time will show that at least 12 future HOF’s were there.
Here’s my list of players from the ’07 game who surely are headed to Cooperstown.

Click below for more! Pudge Rodriguez: next to Johnny Bench the best catcher all time.

Alex Rodriguez: will hit 850 homers in his career

Derek Jeter: the greatest Yankee shortstop in franchise history

Vladimir Guerrero: MVP candidate every season

Ichiro: will come close to 3000 hits in the US

Ken Griffey, Jr.: tremendous power, great center fielder

Barry Bonds: even with the controversy best slugger in history

Manny Ramirez: will hit 600 home runs

Johan Santana: after he signs with the Yankees will win two more Cy Youngs

Albert Pujols: whom would you rather see hitting with the game on the line? Aaron Rowand?

Trevor Hoffman: with his change up as dominant as Eck

John Smoltz: the most versatile pitcher of his era.
These players have a chance for enshrinement if their careers continue on their current paths:
Jose Reyes: the most dynamic player in the game

Russell Martin: looks like a young Pudge, plays like him too

Grady Sizemore: might be the Indians best center fielder since Hall of Famer Larry Doby

Justin Verlander: if he stays healthy his stuff is the best in baseball

Miguel Cabrera: where he plays after Florida will determine his spot in history

Cole Hamels: lefthanders are unique; he’s one of the best in today’s game
The names are not as dramatic as the one’s from ’71, but over the course of history the ’07 roster might go down as one of the best in all –star annals.
Much of the focus over the next two weeks will be on possible trades before the July 31st deadline. How many managers won’t be back next season to see the fruits of their GM’s efforts?

On the hot seat:
New York: The Yankees are going to bring in more young players next year; it’s time for a change in managers.
Tampa Bay: Joe Maddon was much better as Mike Scioscia’s bench coach.
Baltimore: Dave Trembley is fine, who knows what Peter Angelos will do.
Chicago White Sox: Chaos all season in the Windy City.
Philadelphia: Charlie Manuel is a good man, but in this town you have to win eventually.
St. Louis: Tony La Russa always said after ten years the players stop listening.
Cincinnati: Interim manager Pete Mackanin is just that.
Pittsburgh: Low profile team needs up beat manager along the lines of former Pirate skipper Chuck Tanner.
Houston: Something about this team doesn’t seem right.
Colorado: This team can win next year, I don’t think Clint Hurdle will be there to see it happen.
The most important deals next week might be for relief pitching.
Relievers who might be available and who would make a difference on a contender: Eric Gagne, Octavio Dotel, Joe Kennedy, Akinori Otsuka, Chad Cordero, Jon Rauch, Damaso Marte, Brad Lidge, Salomon Torres, David Riske, Shawn Chacon, David Weathers, and Mike Stanton.
Bay Area baseball fans should keep an eye on Pittsburgh with outfielder Jason Bay and shortstop Jack Wilson available for the right price.

Marty-
I was fortunate enough to win the tickets Saturday night.

I was heading to the game with my 2 young boys.
We were listening to your show (as I always do before almost all the games).  When I heard the announcement for the tickets I decided to give it a try!

My boys were amazed that we could actually win tickets and they were thrilled to hear my name on the radio.  The younger boy (age 7) was still talking about it on the way home after the game, saying; "I can’t believe they said Dad’s name on the A’s radio !!"

Thanks again!
It was a thrill all around!

Cody my pleasure. The listeners have been great all year, in fact for the ten years of the show. I’m down here in Anaheim and Travis Buck put on quite a show tonight. The Angels are beatable and the A’s and the Mariners can get it done, there is still plenty of time but neither team can backslide too far.
