Mulder Heads to Chicago Early, Coors Bites Giants

Last week I predicted that Mark Mulder will start the All Star game in Chicago this year. yesterday, after beating the Royals in a little over two hours, Mulder left the Bay Area for Chicago for his brother’s Sunday wedding.

Mulder better study the airline schedule because he will be back to the Windy City in July to start the big game.

The Royals have a nice snappy up the middle defense, but lack discipline right now overall and are just what the doctor ordered for the A’s. Oakland and Kansas City will play six more times finishing up next Sunday in KC.

Until Jeremy Affeldt goes to the hill, I wouldn’t worry too much about the Royals, they do just enough wrong to lose to a solid team like the A’s, virtually every time out.

The Giants can hear the footsteps of the Dodgers loud and clear. Milwaukee is ready to roll over for LA, while San Fran’s pitching staff gets mauled in Coors Field. Barry Bonds probably won’t play today in Colorado due to a sore knee, hurt in a fielding attempt in Friday’s game.

Kurt Ainsworth gets his first taste of Rocky Mountain baseball and may be a pleasant surprise if he relies on a sinking fastball, the only pitch that works in Colorado.

More baseball below!Pedro Martinez is out until late next week, meaning he won’t oppose The Rocket Monday night in NY, when Roger Clemens goes for win number 300. Clemens most likely will have to beat Tim Wakefield for the big win.

Bill Mueller is hitting .385 and there is no end in sight for the excellent infielder. I always thought that the Giants should have given him a chance this year instead of investing 24 million in Edgardo Alfonzo. Mueller is a dynamite fielder and teams that win pennants have players like Bill Mueller. The Red Sox got lucky picking him up. It also allows Boston to dangle Shea Hillenbrand in front of the Cubs and Diamondbacks until one of those two teams gives up a real pitcher.

The Yankees are out of first place for the first time this year, they led the league from opening day, their longest time in first starting a season since 1949. The Yanks have hitting issues, poor bullpen work, and the starters at one point 16-0 are now losing regularly. David Wells tries to cool off the Blue Jays and Cory Lidle today in NY, Wells’ favorite place to pitch.

Joe Borchard is up with the ChiSox who have little to rejoice about. Jon Garland pitched well Friday night, but lost to Detroit which isn’t easy to do.

There had to be something wrong with Troy Percival after seeing him give up a grand slam to Brian Roberts. Homers like that just don’t happen for little second baseman off one of the best closers in the game. With Percival on the DL, the Rangers can make a serious move past the Angels.

Matt Kinney unfortunately pitches for Milwaukee, otherwise he would have a good shot to beat LA today.

Shinjo threw out the tying run at the plate last night to end the game for the Mets. Defense, defense, defense will save the day for NY, their pitching isn’t that bad, but you have to catch the ball. Art Howe is managing in NY, just take a look at the box scores every night, many moves.

Maybe I was too hasty in praising the Braves starting pitching, Atlanta’s offense is spectacular in a less than dominant NL, but its pitching may have some holes which are starting to show up more frequently.

I still say if the Phillies get Curt Schilling, they win the NL.

John Thomson has come up with a very effective change up and throws it today against Omar Daal and the Orioles. Baltimore tried to sneak .204 hitting centerfielder Gary Matthews, Jr through waivers Friday, but the Padres claimed him.

BJ Surhoff may be back for the Orioles Saturday. The O’s are seeing more AAA players on their roster than bonafide major leaguers.

Kyle Lohse pitched a tremendous game last season in Seattle for the Twins. He opposes Joel Pineiro tonight in Safeco. Mike Cameron robbed Torri Hunter of a three run homer in the first last night, saving Jamie Moyer from big trouble. Cameron and Hunter are two of the finest players in the game, both on and off the field.

Brad Radke deserved a better fate last night as his defense let him down. Doug Mankiewicz better get back soon because the Twins first base play is suffering, it hurt them last night in Seattle.

Tom Glavine in Atlanta for the Mets and Shawn Estes in Houston for the Cubs, two pitchers with something to prove today. I’m banking on Glavine getting the job done and for Estes to have trouble with the Astros.

I love that Astro bull pen, can it last four more months?

We shall see.

The A’s are “solid”? They have weak and inconsitent hitting and an average bullpen. They scored 1 run today off a bullpen pitcher. Sure, they will heat up. But their hitting leaves a lot to be desired.

cory lidle won again today bringinf his record to 8-2 and he usually pitches better in the 2ndhalf of thes season. wonder if the jays would trade him back for ted lilly ? just kidding

Absolutely correct, the current blame is laid at the doorstep of Miguel Tejada, and Eric Chavez for their poor hitting with men on base. Over 162 games, they will have enough hitting to be there and with their starting pitching the way it is, they don’t need a lot of offense. The GM will bring in some bull pen help too. After 48 games the A’s are 28-20. If they win 60 of the last 100 and 7 of the next 14, that’s 95 wins which should be enough to qualify for something. They seem to be a second half team the last few years also.
