Is the Division Worse than the Team? Baseball Discussed by Ed Stern

Marty; For the past month we have been emphasizing the myriad problems the Giants face, with the bottom line being that this is simply a bad ball club which needs a complete overhaul. Perhaps a case can be made for a more optimistic approach to this season?

Changes coming up in Seattle

The past few years the
Seattle Mariners organization
have kept a low profile and
basically the same talent
on the field. But that is
about to change very
soon here in the Emerald
City.

Today's Giants and their future by Ed Stern

Marty- Glenn Dickey. in today’s Chronicle, writes about the Giants under the headline, “prepare for the big purge”, with the accompanying suggestion “just don’t expect any miracles this season.” This comes at a time when the team may be the first club within memory to win 100 games one year and follow it by losing 100 the next year.

Recently, the question was asked, on this page, when commenting on the Giants prospects for this year, has the day of reckoning come? The answer is, clearly, yes, the day of reckoning has come. Dickey agrees and has some thoughts and suggestions concerning the future.

Bonds' View of Giants' Problems as Discussed by Ed Stern

Marty– An interesting article in this morning’s paper reciting Barry’s take on the team’s hardship to date. For one thing, what is immediately impressive is his attitude, which is positive, lays no blame, and reinforces his position as the leader, not only on the field but in the clubhouse as well. Those who view him as a loner, self-interested and removed from the rest of the team, may have to give further thought to such judgment.

Interesting commentary by Ed Stern, click below for more!

The Giants and Some Hardheaded Realism by Ed Stern

Marty–It is time to stop putting the best face possible on the Giants prospects this year and address realities. These realities include not only looking at this immediate year’s problems but the future for the franchise. In a fashion typical for a longstanding fan, there has been an attempt in the past few weeks to downplay obvious difficulties, to say that it is too early to give up, that the season has just begun and things will get better. Unfortunately, it is true that the season has just started but it is wrong to say that things will get better.

A Short Response to Amaury and Marty by Ed Stern

Amaury– I haven’t given up on the Giants yet. It is far too early to throw in the towel. Somehow, this team, over the past three years, has managed to make believers out of non-believers too often to allow the luxury of surrendering early. Having said that, where are they going to find three more starting pitchers? How long are they going to continue starting Rueter for the simple pleasure of seeing him give up a five run lead which he enjoyed by the bottom of the second inning? If some club needs a left-handed batting practice pitcher maybe the Giants can find a place for him.

Do not give up on Giants….yet

In 2002 the Anaheim Angels
finished the month of April
6-14. I remember in some
Press Boxes some reporters
talking about:
When is Angel manager
Mike Sciosia is going to
be fired ?
That same season the
Angels won the World
Series over the Giants
in seven games.

Has the Day of Reckoning Come? Analysis by Ed Stern

Marty- Glenn Dickey beat me to the punch. His Saturday article outlined the systemic problems the franchise has, problems which go beyond their present difficulties on the field. He discussed “three mistakes in judgment” the team made. He probably stopped there because he ran out of room.
