he got the manager's job but not here

I read in the paper today that Ron Washington, the 3rd base coach for the A’s for the last 11 years, has been hired as the manager of the Texas Rangers. I had mixed emotions about that announcement. I am extremely pleased that Ron got the manager’s job but I was sad to hear that he was going to Texas. I had hoped that Ron would be the new A’s manager. He had worked here for 11 years under Art Howe and Ken Macha. He is a tireless worker and has helped many players improve their fielding. Eric Chavez and Miguel Tejada are just 2 examples.
During sping training,Ron would be at the park as early as 7 am to work with the young players. He is a man who is a baseball lifer who just lives and breathes baseball.
The game has been good to him and he has been good for the game of baseball. The A’s are losing one of the good guys. Let’s all wish Ron the best in his new endeavor.
So, Ron, stay well and good luck, except against the A’s.

the Rangers did very well to hire Wash…but they still need starting pitching in order to win the division.

The A’s will definitely miss him…and I think they missed the best mangerial option.

Interesting that Art Howe will be Wash’s bench coach. Certainly makes the games against the Rangers more intense. Rangers are being hit hard by potential free agent losses, hope that this job doesn’t turn out to be a disaster for both men because without the highpowered offense of the past the Rangers are going to have to significantly upgrade the starting pitching to be competitive in the West.
I think Mark De Rosa is a key player to re-sign, then they could use him at left or third and possibly trade Hank Blalock for some pitching.
Padilla is another gamble but he can give the A’s difficulty so Texas should bite the bullet and bring him back.
Adam Eaton is a competent (5-6 inns) ML pitcher and deserves another shot since his ’06 year was marred by injuries.
Carlos Lee and Gary Matthews seem sure to move on to other teams. An outfield of Nelson Cruz and Brad Wilkerson doesn’t scare anybody.
Good luck to RW and AH, they’ll need it.
