Seattle Heads to New York, Reds to Pac Bell

Mike Cameron leads the Mariners into Yankee Stadium. How many more homers can he hit over this weekend?

Cameron wrote his name into the record books with a four homer game against the White Sox Thursday.

What will the weekend bring?

Freddy Garcia gets a shot to be the number one pitcher that Lou Piniella hopes he is, against the Yankees tonight.

Ted Lilly threw a one hitter at the Mariners last Saturday night and lost 1-0.

Garcia better not look to the pen. Piniella wants the big righty to stand up and go deep into the game against the Yankees.

Seattle’s worst slumping hitters hit seven homers Thursday against Chicago. Cameron, Bret Boone, and Jeff Cirillo accounted for all the homers. It was so embarrassing for the Sox that they sent pitchers Jim Parque and Jon Rauch to AAA, before they could remove their uniforms, after the 15-4 loss.

Mark Buerhle tries to reclaim the Sox’ lost pride against the A’s. Buerhle has pitched well against the A’s, but was hit hard last weekend in Oakland. The Sox play better at home than on the road, but the A’s have dominated Chicago for the last two years. Homers have hurt Buerhle the past ten days. The A’s have been living off the long ball all year.

Mike Fyhrie, who won his first major league game against Chicago last weekend, goes for the A’s. It took Fyhrie eight years or so to get that win, can he win his second game in a week? This one will be decided by the bull pens, trust me.

Texas gets a chance to add to the Cleveland misery with lefty Doug Davis on the hill. Cleveland will counter with five inning pitcher Danys Baez. The Tribe doesn’t hit very much and Baez needs the bull pen. Both offense and relief, are in short supply in Cleveland right now.

The Angels are fortunate to be going into Toronto where the Blue Jays manager Buck Martinez is on the clock.

I predict when Toronto leaves Oakland after their three game series next weekend (May 10 -12), A’s bench coach Ken Macha leaves with the Jays, as their new manager.

Just a hunch.

Scott Erickson continues his audition for delivery to Arizona in July, against KC tonight.

Andy Ashby tries to duplicate his one hitter of last weekend against the Cubs, this time in LA. Sammy Sosa is alive and well and was sighted in San Diego hitting two bombs on Thursday. For the Cubs, it’s about time Juan Cruz broke into the win column. At least for Don Baylor’s sake.

Curt Schilling gets to see if the Expos are for real. Good luck Bruce Chen.

Pedro Astacio and his relievers match up against Dave Mlicki and his bull pen in Houston. Some weekend series. This could be a preview of October baseball. Mets vs. Houston.

Jose Rijo is reliving Don Sutton’s “five and fly” philosophy by giving the Reds five good innings and then turning it over to the bull pen. Unfortunately for Rijo, the Reds pen worked into the fourteenth inning versus the Dodgers Thursday night, before losing 3-2.

Jose, don’t look over your shoulder for help. They won’t be around. I predict BBonds goes deep against Rijo.

Phillies get the Rockies in Philadelphia.

Rockies on the road (3-9) and instant no -offense once they leave Colorado.

Brad Radke tries to extend the Twins home dominance (12-1). Nate Cornejo, for Detroit, gets to see if he can win back to back games.

J.C. Romero, LaTroy Hawkins, and Eddie Guardado have been fabulous for Minnesota in the late innings.

Tell the Red Sox to enjoy the weekend. They won’t see all those patsies they have been playing for the first thirty games of the year, for a while. They show up in Oakland Tuesday night for some real baseball. The A’s won’t see Pedro, he fattens up on the Devil Rays Monday unless the Sox get very brave and save Martinez for the A’s. I don’t think they will. Too cold in the Bay Area for Pedro’s rehabbing wing.

Hey, not a bad weekend.
