Bonds goes to the A'S as DH

Here is one way of solving the Athletics
attendance problem.
Just get Barry Bonds to play for the
A’s and make him the Designated Hitter,
he will be playing at 42 years old
in the Bay Area and drawing many
fans from all corners of the Bay.

By Amaury Pi-GonzálezDoes anybody here believes that
the A’S owners would not hesitate
to acquire Barry Bonds as a DH to
continue his pursuit of the home run
record, the greatest record in pro
sports ?And to keep it here in the Bay ?

Many think the only way that Barry Bonds
could play at his age in 2006
(if he can come back)it would be as a
DH. And the Oakland A’S need a DH
and a drawing card. That would fit
the Athletics perfectly. Look at this;
Giants fans would still flock to Oakland
to see history in the making, A’S fans
would finally have a mega-star. A star
of the caliber of a Reggie Jackson,
MarK McGwire or José Canseco and
let’s face it ,they do not have that type
of player today, with all respect to
Eric Chávez. Plus Chávez is some 550
home runs away from catching Bonds.

And aside from Giants and A’S fans the
casual fan (you know the type, those
that discovered baseball in 1998 when Sosa
and McGwire were after the record)those
people would pay to see Bonds playing in
Oakland.

The Athletics with Barry Bonds (all he has
to do is hit)no need to even run, could
increase and will increase their attendance
to the point that for the next two seasons
talks about a new park in Oakland would
be muted. Because the talks would be
about a hitter in Oakland after Ruth and
Aaron.

Wait a minute. I know some A’S fans that
say “we don’t want Barry Bonds” but after
he joins the team and hits a couple of balls
to the right center field pavillion (Reggie
Jackson’s territory) people would say
WOW ! and be happy to have him.

This way after he catches Ruth and Aaron
wearing the Athletics uniform the A’s
could then built a statue for Barry at
the new Oakland ballpark in 2008 after
he announces he is thinking of retiring,
just short of 800 home runs.

Real excitement would be back in Oakland,
like the days of the Bash Brothers.
Pitching is great, the A’S have it, chemistry
is great the A’S have it, but to have a guy
going after 715 and 755 home runs,
who has that ?

Some would say it is crazy, loco, insane
whatever, but with everyday that goes by
there is much greater chance that if Bonds
returned at all, he would do it as a DH in
the American League.

Bay Area fans, would you rather see Bonds
breaking the record in Baltimore or in Oakland ?

Here is your chance A’S to slap the Giants
in the face, your one time to get even with
that beautiful park at China Basin, the fans
with cell phones passing the pizza, with no
idea what’s happening on the field.

It probably will not happen, we all know
that, but I thought It would be fun to talk
about it. After all this is baseball, we are
not settling any Middle-East crisis here.

The A’S might win 40 of the next 34 games
and I can still see 12,067 fans on a Monday
night at Oakland, but with Barry Bonds in
2006 thing will change dramatically.

For those that doubt above. How many of
you after the Athletics went 6-20 in May
knew they were going to return in this
fashion ? C’mon, be honest. Look at the
odds in Nevada during Spring Training, the
A’S were one of the longest shots to
win anything this season. If you would have
placed a $100 bet on the A’S this past
March you are looking at making a fortune
with that bet as of today.
So, never say never.

The beauty of baseball: A team with Sarloos,
Blanton,Harden,Haren all “household”names
playing this type of ball, without Durazo and
with a rookie at first base ? With Chávez
their established star not having a great
season. even like that they are killing the
league.

Eric Byrnes is in Baltimore,I hope he doesn’t
break the fences there and he does well,
his intensity was incredible, but he also could
not hit right handers. Who needs Octavio Dotel?
When you have a great street in Houston
Street. Even Eric Chávez doesn’t have to hit
40 home runs alone this season for the
A’S to win. How many “experts”could have
predicted that in March ? Peter Gammons ?
Please…

Are the 2005 Athletics a surprise or a miracle?

Wouldn’t it be cool to have a 7-time MVP
wearing your uniform ?

Yes it is only baseball. Ball is round and it comes
in a square box. Hasta la vista muchachos y
muchachas !

Great idea,Amaury. The big problem is that the A’s will never, ever shell out 18 million bucks for a player. I think
Mr.Bonds will finish his career in Anaheim or maybe even
New York. It would be nice but I think it’s just not in the cards. Sure would like to have a new stadium, however.
Just got back from Baltimore and Camden Yards and the Ravens facility are right next to each other. That could work in Oakland.

Que Pasa Amaury,

It sounds good on paper, but the A’s have Dan Johnson, Scott Hatteburg and even Jason Kendall to fill the DH spot for this year and beyond. I agree with Jerry that Bonds, if goes the AL to become a DH, it be to Los Angeles Angelinos de Anaheim. Even the Yankees won’t spend the money for Bonds just for all the baggage involve in having this superstar on a team. Good idea but no thanks. Lastly, this article makes you sound like a Latino Gary Radnich, which is kind of scary.

Si, solo en Beisbol.
