Fremont would like to have the A'S
The Fremont City Council met on Tuesday
October 11 and at the top of their agenda
was the possibility of luring the Oakland
A’S team to move here to Fremont.
As a citizen of the City of Fremont since 1979
I have seen this city grow from a small bedroom
community to the fourth largest in the Bay Area
with a population of 210,000. Only San José
San Francisco and Oakland have larger populations
in the Bay Area.
But I have to agree that this is a long long long
shot. Maybe the last shot in the dark for the A’S.
Homes that you could buy here in the 70s for
$50,000 are selling for $800,000 today. I have seen the
progress in this town, but to have a Major League
franchise would have to be a “regional effort”.

Fremont, CA.Bob Wasserman the Mayor of the City of Fremont
said during the council meeting that in the past
he has been contacted by Supervisor Scott Haggerty since the County of Alameda will be
a partner with Fremont if the Athletics decide
to relocate here to the southern part of the
county.
At the present time the City of Oakland is in negotiations with the Oakland A’s for the possibility
of building a new park for the team in Oakland,
but if Oakland strikes out, Fremont would very much like to see the possibility of having the team
here.
With above in mind, Fremont Mayor
Bob Wasserman made a motion to take a vote
here at the City Council otnight. The vote
was unanimous 5 to 0 in favor of a study
that would cost the city of Fremont between
$30,000 to $50,000.
This preliminary feasabilty study will explore
the pros and cons of transportation,economic
impact and other related matters. This study
could take about 3 months.
Fred DÃaz City Manager of Fremont said:
“we are not suffering from any delusions that
this is a done deal”.
The whole meeting took no more than 15 minutes
and it is obvious that Fremont will move ahead
with the understanding that at the present time
the City of Oakland and Oakland only can negotiate
with the Oakland Athletics.

My opinion:
It could very easily be that for the Oakland A’S
to stay in the Bay Area they will have two shots.
One, building a new park in Oakland. Or, two,
building one here in Fremont. If those two
fail then we could be looking at the Las Vegas
A’s or “blank” A’s but not in the Bay Area. by
2008.
At the present time San José is out of the picture
and there is no other Bay Area city talking about
the possibility of getting the Athletics.
There is land available here in Fremont specially
next to the 680 highway close by the NUMMI
plant (New United Motors Manufacturing Inc)
a joint venture between General Motors and
Toyota and by the way, the largest automobile
manufacturing plant in the western United
States. However, on that land studies made
years ago revealed that there is large amounts
of toxic waste. The NUMMI plant employs around
5,000 people and traffic could be a nightmare.
BART Fremont is a few miles away from that
site and BART expansion is not coming to that
part of Fremont yet, although there are plans
to extend BART south maybe all the way to
San José.
If I was a betting man I would put the bulk of my
money first in Oakland because here in Fremont
the possibility seems to be many many years away.
It all depends on Lew Wolf and his partners if
they think Fremont would be the place here in
Alameda County where he could save the A’s
from leaving the Bay Area. Anyway, he is fronting
a lot of the money for the new ballpark.
Aside from that, there is not much more happening
with the A’s as far as a new ballpark, but in this
crazy world there could be surprises. Many still
believe San José would be the perfect new home
for the A’s, the 10th largest city in America with
one of the highest per capita income and a fast
growing economy. But we all know that Major
League Baseball has Santa Clara County as
San Francisco Giants territory. Of course this
could be changed, but this is another long long long
shot.
So what do we have A’s fans ? This team could be
homeless in a few years, so enjoy your Oakland
Athletics for the next few years everything else
might be out of our control.

It may not be that much of a long shot. A new stadium in Oakland may very well get caught in the crossfire of the upcoming mayors race. And if you have a Ron Dellums out there saying that the city shouldn’t put any time or money into a stadium that won’t benefit the “working class”, then Ignacio DeLaFuente’s going to have a problem selling this to a lot of Oakland voters.
Dellums has yet to say anything on the stadium issue, so he may surprise us still.
Where Fremont could mess it up is by insisting that the city’s name be put on the team. Supposedly Santa Clara made that same demand when the Giants were thinking about going down there. But wherever the A’s wind up, they HAVE to be marketed as a regional team. “Fremont A’s” aint gonna cut it.
Hopefully, the Fremont city fathers will look at the big picture and see the benefits to their city even if it’s the “California”, Golden State”, or even still the “Oakland” Athletics.
