Barry Bonds, Legal Probelms, and Baseball by Ed Stern
Marty; Two comments, one by you and one by Amaury, are provocative. Amaury says, in his article analyzing the American League, “leave the steroids to the clinical experts”. You point out that the Giants, without Bonds, “are a very old team without a leader”. There is a relationship between these observations.

For those of us who have a long-standing love affair with the game, Amaury, Marty Lurie. myself, there has been an understandable reluctance to delve into the steroid controversy. We would like to see it disappear. The game has always been an island of sanity in a crazy, chaotic world. It provides us with an innocent escape from the daily headlines of death and disaster, of corporate malfeasance, of all the misery endemic in the African world.
Unfortunately, we are, in all likelihood, deluding ourselves. Rather than dwelling solely on batting averages, ERAs, RBI’s, we may be facing the impact past steroid use has on the fortunes of some of the ball clubs. “Past” rather then “present”. With all the emphasis existing today, it is unlikely that present day players are going to be indulging in drug-enhancers.
This brings us to the Barry Bonds story. This may make Martha Stewart ‘s problems pale into insignificance. Bonds could discover that appearing before a tough-minded judge, an appropriate description of the judge presiding over the Balco case, on her turf, is a different game than the one he is accustomed to play with the media. Brushing off questions in typical Barry fashion, being unresponsive , walking away when the going gets rough, being disrespectful, is not going to work in the courtroom. The courtroom is not his playing field.
The possibility of this scenario being played out during the regular season is not remote. I have no idea what the present status of the Balco case is. We do not know when it is likely to come to trial. If it happens during the course of the season, Bonds may find himself in the middle of significant legal unpleasantness. Recent news stories dealing with his relations with a former girl friend may bring into question his credibility before the Grand Jury.
This is not going away. It would not go away even if Bonds was well-liked—and few people who meet Bonds on a daily basis would describe him in that fashion. Bonds is being targeted. There doesn’t appear to be much doubt of that.
It would not be surprising if Bonds had more serious matters on his mind these days than his performance on the field. How that plays out during the season is yet to be seen. Realistically, in discussing the team’s prospects this year, one cannot overlook this, much as we would like to divorce ourselves from these considerations.

These are uncertainties we, and the Giants and Bonds, are going to have to deal with. Their problems are greater than ours.
