Daily Dish February 16th

There is nothing like the excitement and hope that spring training brings to baseball fans. It’s important to keep things in perspective when evaluating the performances in the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues.Spring training reminds me of being in Fantasy Camp except it’s the major leaguers easing into playing shape instead of amateurs enjoying the life of the professional for a week.

What do I mean?

First, bonding again with teammates after the off season. New players get to know the returning players. Last year, it was cool to see Johnny Damon becoming a running buddy of Jason and Jeremy Giambi. It was a relationship that meant alot to the ballclub chemistry during the free agent rumors of midseason. For teams with new players this is an important month. Hello, New York Mets. Give out name tags.

Next, just get in shape baby. Stretch, throw and hit at a leisurely pace. Don’t overdue it. It’s a long season.

Hitters see nothing but fastballs until March 25th or so. Major leaguers love hitting in spring training. They love hitting the smoke. Don’t get carried away by the performance of young players in March. When they start to see off speed pitches near the end of the month, then evaluate what they can do.

Players who have played winter ball are always ahead of everyone else. Don’t put too much weight in their stats early in the process. Eric Byrnes comes to mind for the A’s. He had a phenomenal winter season. He will undoubtedly crush the ball early in March.

Don’t worry if your favorite pitcher gets blasted in March. He’s just working the old soupbone into shape. It’s more important to see if injured players from last season take their regular turn in the rotation. Remember the pitchers are merely throwing to build arm strength.

Lastly, the won and lost records are completely meaningless. Games are decided when the AA and AAA prospects are on the field and the regulars are on their way to the golf course.

For the fans and everyone connected to the game, it’s time to rekindle your baseball memories.

Remember, notwithstanding what the Commisssioner says, everyone has a shot at the pennant in March. Someone once said, “Hope springs eternal”. It applies in baseball.

Enjoy watching the guys get into shape.
