Sunday Pitchers Work Today

It’s Sunday and it’s also Father’s Day, another weekly chapter comes to a close in the marathon season.

Flashback.

Father’s Day 1964, in New York, fans watched Philadelphia righthander Jim Bunning pitch one of the more dramatic games in baseball history, when he threw a no hit perfect game against the New York Mets in Shea Stadium.

I’ve interviewed Bunning, his catcher Gus Triandos, and second baseman Tony Taylor about the game and what they share in their memories about the game is how cool Bunning was that day as the drama unfolded.

In 1964, the Mets were managed by Casey Stengel, at that time a team still racking up 100 losses seasons as easily as Stengel had won AL pennants just a few years earlier with the crosstown Yankees.

Bunning was one of the top pitchers in the NL, on his way to a Hall of Fame career mainly with the Tigers and Phillies.

What a magic game for the Phils that day. Phillie manager Gene Mauch thought 1964 would be their year after the perfect game made every one sit up and take notice of the his team.

But, alas after seemingly having the pennant in hand, the Phil’s blew a 6 1/2 game lead with 12 to play and lost the flag on the last day to the Cardinals.

But on Father’s Day Jim Bunning put the spotlight on his club and made the nation aware of the Phillies, with a game I’ll never forget.

I think about the game every Father’s Day.

So, any potential gems out there today?

Click “Read More” and find out.

Start in Atlanta, where Tom Glavine goes against Derek Lowe.

This one looks like the best game of the day. It could match the the two starting pitchers for this year’s all star game in Milwaukee next month.

Derek Lowe hasn’t given up a homer this year. The Braves are playing winning baseball right now, taking charge of the NL East by 6 1/2 games.

The Red Sox need Manny Ramirez back soon. Lefthanders have given the Sox trouble this season. Ramirez crushes lefties, but is still not ready to play.

Glavine is a master at staying away from righthanded batters with a pitch that usually stays two to three inches off the outside corner of the plate.

The Braves have won the first two games of this series and no matter who wins today, it will be close and low scoring, with a shut out a possibility.

Barry Zito faces Kirk Reuter. A’s and the Giants.

Reuter has pitched extremely well against the A’s in the past. Art Howe will run his righthanded lineup aginst Reuter today.

Adam Piatt back in left, Olmedo Saenz at first, Ramon Hernandez behind the plate, and maybe Eric Byrnes in centerfield or right.

Zito has been the A’s best pitcher this year. He thrives in pressure games. This one looks similar to the Boston – Atlanta game, it could end in a whitewash for one of these lefties.

Baltimore’s Travis Driskill has thrown very well in his starts for the Orioles lately. He is from Australia and a veteran rookie. Terry Adams is coming around for the Phils, who still have hope in the NL East.

Once Scott Rolen is traded the Phils might start playing better. Rolen, playing out his option, is a major pain in the butt to the team.

This could be another pitcher’s duel.

The Tigers have played good baseball against the Diamondbacks this weekend. Beating Curt Schilling Friday and giving Randy Johnson a tough time last night, before losing 3-1.

Tiger starter Mark Redman has been outstanding over the last month. Rick Helling still does it with mirrors. I think the Tigers are playing better baseball now with Felipe Alou as bench coach, making a difference in the overall level of the team’s play.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see Redman shut out the Diamondbacks on Father’s Day in Arizona.

Edgar Martinez is off the DL for Seattle. He can only pinch hit because there is no DH in NL parks and today’s game is in San Diego.

The Mariners won’t need him today as Moyer is on top of his game right now. San Diego counters with a Mexican born lefthander Perez making his major league debut in the Border City.

Sounds like an attempt to boost the gate for today’s game.

Jarrod Washburn faces Hideo Nomo in LA. Shawn Green is on fire again at the plate. Last night two more homers to go with the two he hit in his last two at bats Friday night, tying a major league record of four homers in four consecutive at bats.

The Angels are playing with a lot of confidence and this series has been good for Dodger attendance as over 50,000 have shown up for the first two games each night.

This could be another low scoring game if both pitchers throw the way they can. Nomo has been off lately, but threw well in his last game.

Finally, the Mets try to take the series from the Yankees in Shea.

Pedro Astacio, one of the pleasant surprises for the Mets this year against lefty David Wells.

Wells has already thrown a perfect game in his career.

Nah, it couldn’t happen again on Father’s Day in Shea Stadium?

I wonder if Jim Bunning will be watching the game.

Happy Father’s Day.
