Opening Day had some great baseball moments.
Seatlle put on a furious 9th inning rally that had me on the edge of my seat. It seemed like it was an October game instead of the first game of the season.
Here’s the ninth inning. White Sox up by one after the Mariners scored four in the eighth to close to 6-5.
Keith Foulke, the only live arm in the Chicago bull pen on the mound trying to close it out.
Mark McLemore starts the Mariner ninth with a hit. Ichiro singles, the park is going nuts. Two on, none out. Jeff Cirillo up, perfect bunt to the third baseman, sacrifice accomplished. Second and third, one out, Bret Boone strides to the plate. Foulke delivers a good fastball, Boone grounds sharply to the box, out at first, runners hold.
Sox manager, Jerry Manuel sees Edgar Martinez coming up, catcher Sandy Alomar holds four fingers up. Intentional pass to the league’s most dangerous clutch hitter. Bases loaded.
Now, I look and it’s Mike Cameron coming to the dish. I say to myself, where’s John Olerud? Mark Buerhle, a lefty started for the Sox, Lou Piniella batted Olerud behind Cameron because of the lefty on the mound for Chicago.
I’m sure the White Sox preferred to see Cameron up in this spot.
Foulke, with the bases loaded short arms the first two pitches. the runners lead away, the crowd is in a frenzy, 2-0 on Mike Cameron, a walk forces in the tying run.
Foulke delivers, high fly to right, a can of corn, Aaron Rowand squeezes the ball. Game over. Sox win 6-5. What a start.
Two things. Chicago has no bull pen right now. Seattle will be a tough team to beat. The A’s and Seattle will be in an epic race all season long, trust me.
Let’s see how CC Sabathia pitches today for the Indians. He had a fabulous rookie season, but has gained weight and this is major league baseball where teams are constantly adjusting. Cleveland’s chances of making the AL Central race a three team affair, rely on this young 275 pound man.
Roger Clemens got pounded after Jason Giambi tossed a ball high to the Rocket who was covering first base. The Rocket also bruised his hand trying to catch a ground ball. These things happen to pitchers all the time, but they are more significant when one is pushing 40. Let’s see his next start.
Kevin Brown has owned the Giants since he came in the league. I saw him no hit SF a few years ago. If he struggles against a team he has owned in the past, I worry if I’m a Dodger fan.
I heard Tim Spooneybarger, Braves set up man, is the real deal. The Braves have consistently found the arms for the pen, without signing any big name guys.
Hitting a homer plus getting a couple of other hits has got to make Dave Justice feel better. He is the veteran and now can put his chest out to the youngsters on the team who may have been wondering if he still had it. His opening night was very significant to this team. Everyone in the park was ecstatic when he went deep.
Good first day.
