Inside Baseball This Friday Night

Inside Baseball, the winter version will air this Friday night beginning at 5:30 PM on 1550 AM KYCY.

I’ll be live from Crogan’s Montclair. Expected guests
include Tyler Blezynski from Athleticsnation.com, Shooty Babitt, Glenn Dickey, and a surprise or two, perhaps Ken Korach’s new A’s radio partner for 2006.

We’ll also have Carl Foster who will break down the Cal-Stanford basketball game that will follow the show.

Marty:

I hope the choice of 1550 AM is not an indication that this station will carry the A’s and your programs this year. I love your show and listen to most of the A’s games – sometimes even when I’m attending the game, but I can barely hear 1550 in Concord.

Say it isn’t so, Marty

Joe, in all likelihood, 1550 will be the A’s flagship. However, Marty has hinted that there will be an extensive network in place that will cover areas of the East and South Bay as well(with one of them possibly being an FM station) If they announnce Korach’s partner tomorrow, perhaps they announce everything else as well.

Marty, what I want to know is will the affiliate stations carry your pre-game show as well as Robert Buan’s post game festivities? Living In Fresno, all I get are half the games and nothing else. And since I’m in the car a lot, MLB.com doesn’t help.

It is almost a sure thing that 1550 will carry the A’s games in the immediate Bay Area. Looks like the South Bay is coming together too although slowly. The problem is a strong signal to get the games piped into the deep East Bay. Believe me the A’s are doing everything they can to make it happen.
After being in this business for 10 years and you know the shows are mine, I buy the time and sell the time, this is a very tricky business with station owners and station managers very difficult to take at their word. I’m talking big stations with national reputations as well as small family owned stations.
Don’t count on the radio situation to be fully solved in the next two weeks, if it is we’ll all be very lucky.
There aren’t many alternatives in the Bay Area for the A’s, just go down the list of stations and you’ll see what I mean.
Anyway I’ll have a strong Right Off The Bat show beginning this year from spring training on March 4th on 1550, that much I can say with confidence.

I know this would never happen, but just suppose KNBR’s contract with the Giants was up for renewal, Lew Wolff went in and bought the station and put the A’s on instead. I guarantee you that the big Bay Area stations (KCBS, KGO, etc) would find some way to make room for baseball in their programming.

But the A’s situation now is truly sad. Even in the final years of Charlie Finley you could still count on a station like KKIS 990(out of Concord) to carry games in the East Bay that a weak SF station could not.

I’ve asked this question before, are the A’s truly considered that unattractive a radio product? This doesn’t bode well for getting a new stadium.

Sure, in 10 years or so this will all be a moot point as satellite radio will have a much bigger share of the market if it hasn’t taken over the whole industry. But until then, what do the A’s do, give it away for free?

Marty, it will also very very lucrative to the A’s to have good strong stations in the Stockton and Sacramento areas. There are many A’s fans in these areas, and there has been in the past no reliable radio coverage.

The radio deal changes by the hour. I think we can look forward to having something in the South Bay, but the Stockton, Sacramento, deep East Bay is still not settled.
1550 will be the main station in the immediate Bay Area, that is all that is near 100% at this point.
I understand all the problems for folks in areas that 1550 barely touches.
Who knows what will happen next season but it is time for the A’s to think about acquiring their own signal and I think they realize that is the ultimate answer.

South Bay 1550AM = zero reception,none

This honestly all seems just so pathetic

South Bay is coming together I have that on solid authority. Deep East Bay is another story.

I love your show. Is Free Fm 106.9 going to be a co flagship station. It has great range and is a talk station that the A’s could use along with 1550.

106.9 FM would be a great alternative but Infinity has sunk a ton of money into the station and they have hired on air personalities ($$$$) so they don’t want to give up 6 hours of programming to baseball.

I’m putting the Inside Baseball Show from last night on MP3 and it will be on the home page shortly.

Vince Cotroneo, the A’s new play by play man is part of the broadcast and I think you’ll enjoy the segment.

Any chance the A’s could find a powerful station in the Stockton/Modesto area that could reach far enough to cover the East Bay areas not hit by 1550? I had read about one Modesto station wanting to upgrade its power and move the transmitter closer to the Bay Area.

I had also read that MLB.com’s deals with satellite and wireless carriers is creating problems with radio station owners. Is that part of what’s going on here?

Frankly, I think Lew Wolff should have bought KNBR when it was for sale and told the Giants that when their contract was up that he’d put the A’s on instead…………..unless the Giants were willing to give up San Jose territorial rights. Sweet!

Streaming the broadcast on the internet is a reasonable solution for those of us who can listen from a relatively fixed location. I live in Davis and did this a lot last summer. Also listened to the River Cats when I was in Arizona that way as well.
