Marty Lurie Talks San Francisco Giants Baseball

Sunday Morning Muse

Baseball is a funny game, but apparently horse racing is too.

Let’s see if I have this straight. It’s OK to hit a horse with a whip while flying down the home stretch, but not OK to shock the horse with a hand held buzzer?

Just checking?

Torii Hunter cost his team the game Saturday night in Minnesota with one of those throws that cause mangers to say why.

Manny Ramirez was on third, Jeremy Giambi (.159) hit a short fly to center with less than two out, Ramirez wasn’t going to be able to score on the play, Hunter threw a rocket to the plate, it one hopped the catcher and squirted away, in the Twins effort to corral the throw they inadvertently left home plate uncovered. Ramirez seeing this, took off for home and scored the decisive run in the game.

The Red Sox will get help in the pen as Robert Person, a pitcher I’ve thought has good stuff, will be activated any minute. Much travelled lefty Bruce Chen is also in the Boston picture after they signed him this week.

Click Read more because there is more!Every time the Orioles win a game Jay Gibbons plays a huge part in the victory. Gibbons is hitting .277 with 6 homers and 24 RBI.

Buddy Groom has pitched in over 70 games for four or five years in a row. Could it be catching up with the Oriole lefty? Ken Harvey, a .243 hitter took him out to win the game Saturday.

The A’s, still not knocking the cover off the ball get a steady diet of the Tigers and Indians this week, which should bring a smile to Miguel Tejada, Mark Ellis, Erubiel Durazo, and the other A’s who are feeling for it right now.

Who knows how long Eric Chavez will be out after taking a line drive off his wrist area Saturday? Jason Grabowski and Frank Menechino will platoon, I guess. Wasn’t Adam Piatt a third baseman at one point in his suddenly disappearing career?

How much longer can the Angels keep Scott Shields in their pen ( 1.07 ERA) while Ramon Ortiz keeps giving up homers at a record setting pace?

Who would you rather have at 1B, Scott Spiezio or Scott Hatteberg?

Should the White Sox trade for Carl Everett? I would give up Jon Garland to get the switch hitting outfielder in the last year of his contract. The White Sox can hang with the Twins in the Central, but need some lefty swingers to offset all their slow righthanded sluggers.

Strange, but if I was Jerry Manuel I’m not sure I would want to put my future security in Everett’s hands.

Manuel may not have a choice because the Sox need a lefthanded hitter badly.

Ryan Christianson, one of the finest young men in the game, is getting a full shot in center field for the Rangers while Doug Glanville is on the DL. Ryno went 0-4 Saturday and is now hitting .179, not good for job security.

Alan Benes in the rotation for Texas, need I say more.

Everyone wants Shea Hillenbrand. Arizona and the Cubs are falling all over each other in an attempt to get the third baseman who can hit.

If you were Boston who would you rather have Juan Cruz, hard throwing Cub righty who can relieve or Byung Hyun Kim from the Diamondbacks. I’ll take Kim before Arizona changes its mind.

Cam Mark Mulder pitch another game today in under two hours? Can he throw his fourth complete game in a row? The Yankees will do everything they can to upset his rhythm, count on it.

Even though Jorge Posada and Bernie Williams hit righthanded homers off Barry Zito yesterday, the Yanks are weaker when facing lefties.

Andy Pettitte is only 30 years old, somehow he pitches older than that. He goes today in Oakland against Mulder. Pettitte has been tough on the A’s in Oakland since making his debut here.

Sterling Hitchcock throws 87 MPH tops and that is the reason Texas won’t bite and take the lefty and his 6 million dollar contract. Sterling was sterling in relief yesterday and the Yanks may trust him more as the season wears on.

Colby Lewis may be AAA bound if he doesn’t shut Cleveland down today or at least go six innings without walking the ball park.

The Giants are starting to moan again every time they lose. Last night they blamed the umpire for missing a third strike on Vinny Castilla thus prolonging the inning. Two batters later Javy Lopez homered off of Joe “pitch me every other day” Nathan for the game winner.

Hey, Nathan made some bad pitches, the Braves can hit, you lost the game, stop whining and give the other team some credit.

More importantly Ray Durham sprained his ankle and Kirk Reuter tweaked his knee, whatever that means, that should be a bigger concern to Felipe Alou than the umps call.

Mike Hampton continues his comeback today against SF, a team he has dominated in the past.

The A’s face the Twins six times in the next few weeks. This time the Twins will see so much of Mulder, Zito, and Lilly they will think Tim Hudson was traded. The Twinkies will have that righthanded lineup card xeroxed for every day use.

Which Derek Lowe will show up tonight in Minnesota for Boston?

The A’s have shut down Alfonso Soriano all season long. Can they do it one more time today?

Anaheim is one game below .500 and Aaron Sele and Kevin Appier are back, seems like good times are ahead.

Oh yeah, those two break down more than a 55 Ford and John Lackey hasn’t pitched a good game this year.

Who said that?

So Jeff Torborg is out in Fla and Jack McKeon is in. This is progress? The Marlins have lost starting pitchers AJ Burnett, Josh Beckett, Michael Tejera, and Mark Redman due to injuries in the past week. Good luck Jack.

Brian Giles hit his first two homers of the year Saturday. He is Pittsburgh’s only legit hitter, so watch them score some runs now.

Anyone notice the Cubs stopped hitting. With Sammy on the DL, this will be a tough stretch for Chicago, I don’t care who is pitching on either side.

Randy Wolf can pitch.

OK guys enough. David Bell .207 and Pat Burrell .209, Larry Bowa says the joke is over.

El Duque out three more months. Who says the Yanks don’t know what they are doing?

Where would the Cards be if they had Rocky Biddle closing games for them. Biddle, the former ChiSox, now Montreal’s closer has 8 saves.

Why didn’t Billy Koch close the White Sox win last night in Seattle?

On Mother’s Day in 1956, I took my mother to Ebbets Field and saw Carl Erskine no hit the Giants.

What can top that today?

We’ll see, because every day you see something different in baseball.

In regard to Hatteberg, I’d rather have someone who can actually play firstbase. He is terrible defensively (can’t field or throw) and his inconsistent bat doesn’t make up for it.

Dude what game are you watching? Not only is Hatty a very consistant hitter with a great eye at the plate, he is also more than adequate at first base defensively and getting better every day. Sheesh! Next you’ll start in on Eric Chavez saying he’s got no power and a stone glove and wish we had Troy

Glaus.

Chavez is a bona fied field player. Hatteberg is not. He doesn’t have a good glove (notice he can’t dig that well) and his arm is terrible (he can’t throw to home or third without bouncing the ball). I’d like to see how Durazo does on a regular basis. If he is going to get hurt, it’s going to be due to his swing, not his fielding. He uses a lot of his back in his swing.
