Sunday Morning Thoughts

Tim Hudson is looking very good. Unbelievable, Hudson’s major league record is now 81-33.

We are talking Whitey Ford, Spud Chandler, Pedro Martinez winning percentage right now for Hudson.

This man can pitch and should be resigned this season before his contract runs out in 2005. I wouldn’t wait around.

The Mariners are struggling and can’t get the big hit or the right pitch when the game is on the line as they fell to 0-5 Saturday.

Just as Rafael Soriano showed he needs more spring training on Friday, Eddie Guardado’s debut Saturday indicated that the lefty’s velocity is not where it should be right now.

Marco Scutaro continued his magic weekend, driving in the tying run and playing major league defense in the field.

It’s too early to determine just where Scutaro will be in a month when Frank Menechino and Mark McLemore are back, but for the first week of the season, Scutaro is a major reason the A’s are 4-1.

The Angels were pounded by Texas again Saturday.

What does it mean?

Click below!John Lackey has not pitched well for Anaheim since 2002. Lackey was abysmal last season and was rocked yesterday by Texas.

In my opinion, he lacks command of his pitches and will be out of the rotation shortly. Aaron Sele will get a shot or Scott Shields will be brought in from the bullpen to take Lackey’s turn.

Meanwhile, the Angels rocked Kenny Rogers, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the 12 runs the Angels gave up. Rogers settled down after a six run fourth, somehow staying in the game.

Texas is crushing the Anaheim staff this weekend and getting decent relef pitching to close the games.

Bartolo Colon needs to be the stopper today and he goes against Chan Ho Park who was more than adequate against the A’s on Tuesday. Park became unglued in the sixth against Oakland, so if the Rangers have a lead by the sixth today, I’d get him out and turn it over to the pen until Park builds up arm strength.

The A’s go into Texas on Tuesday and should face Colby Lewis or Mickey Callaway, RA Dickey, and perhaps Rogers on the Thursday.

Erubiel Durazo still isn’t showing any signs of breaking out of his two year power slump, but he did leg out a single which started the winning rally Saturday. Durazo has surprising speed for a big man.

Minnesota needs a good game from Johan Santana today because its bullpen is in there every night for big innings. Detroit comes back with Mike Maroth who is a better pitcher than his 20 losses of 2003.

Mike Mussina goes for his 200th career win again today. Mussina has not been sharp in either start this season. The Yankees aren’t hitting very much right now, but things will change in a hurry against Dan Wright who never seems to keep it together very long.

Billy Koch finished another game for the Sox. I guess with his 6 million dollar contract, the Sox will give him every chance to close in the early part of the year.

Other than Javier Vasquez and Kevin Brown the Yankees starting pitching has been a disaster. Not a good recipe when chasing the Red Sox and their big three.

Pedro looked marvelous Saturday night beating Toronto. Red Sox haven’t hit well yet and with Johnny Damon out now just take a look at the averages in the lineup. If you think the A’s struggle in the 7-8-and 9 spots, the Sox are worse with Mark Bellhorn and Pokey Reese bringing up the rear.

Keith Foulke uses a minimum of pitches to close games. If he is sound he will make Boston very happy. Yesterday he needed only 11 pitches to finish 1 1/3 innings for the save.

The Cubs got a great game from Sergio Mitre, but lost to Atlanta when the bullpen fell apart in the eighth. Why wasn’t LaTroy Hawkins in the game to set up the closer? Or Michael Wuertz who has been untouchable?

The Cubs aren’t walking, getting on base, or hitting a lick, that’s why they are having trouble right now.

Kerry Wood versus Russ Ortiz today. This game has the makings of a low run, power game with 25 strike outs between both teams.

Mark Mulder versus Jamie Moyer. This one may be over in less than two hours. I thought Mulder lacked some velocity in his first start. The Angels pounded the lefty Moyer in his opening effort. Eric Chavez hits Moyer well, so he may decide this one with a big hit around the sixth inning or so.

Royals throw another lefty today, Dennis Reyes against the Indians. If Cleveland could close games, they would be in first place right now in the central.

Marlins own the Phillies and today Josh Beckett goes up against Kevin Millwood who has yet to step up in a big game for the Phils.

Al Leiter pitched well for the Mets, but they couldn’t touch John Patterson. Think Arizona would like Patterson back instead of Randy Choate especially after Casey Daigle and Steve Sparks were blasted by the Cards the past two days.

The Reds can close games, a sure sign of good things to come. Ryan Wagner has a big upside, Phil Norton looks like a nice lefty short man, and Danny Graves can finish the deal.

Jimmy Haynes versus lefty hot shot strike out artist Oliver Perez for the Pirates today.

Shawn Estes versus LA and Odalis Perez today. Estes, a most pleasant surprise this spring has pitched many times in Dodger Stadium. The Rockies have such trouble winning in California, maybe Estes can turn it around. Adrian Beltre is hitting early in the year for a change. Dave Roberts already has 7 steals for LA.

Giants are looking very ragged, this happens when your starting pitchers are gone by the 5th inning. Jason Schmidt is sorely needed. Who knows what Brett Tomko will have today? One thing is for sure the bullpen is not the same without Robb Nen and Tim Worrell.

The Padres hit the ball. The San Diego bullpen is no picnic either. Trevor Hoffman doesn’t look like he has that great changeup yet and know one else in that pen is lights out. It keeps things very tense in Petco at the end of the game.

Sunday baseball, how about playing two today?

It was just a matter of time before the infield defense cost the A’s a ballgame. Scutaro should have made that play in the 9th. If he makes the play, the A’s win. Oh well, he is still learning.
How long do the A’s get burned with Hammond until they realize he can’t pitch to more than a few batters a game? He gives up the longball too much.

for all of us that love baseball, yesterday’s home run by barry bonds will be long remembered. While it was just another home run, just one of 660 hit by Barry, it was indeed special and dramatic. Of all the players only 4 have reached this level. Henry Aaron,Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and now Barry Bonds. I thought in my mind that the Babe would be saying”come on,kid. I’m next on the ladder and you ‘re gomg to make it. Baseball is a game made up of memories and Barry reaching this plateau will be part of those memories. Duane Kuiper’s
call of the home run was magnificent: He hits it high,he hits it deep, it’s out of here” with his voice reflecting the excitement of the moment will be part of that memory. It just doesn’t get any better than that.
