Angels Handle Yankees, Reds Won't Go Away

There is something about a Yankee Angel game that is unlike others that the New Yorkers play.

The Angels play the Yankees with alot of confidence, knowing that if they stay close somehow they hit enough to beat the Yankees in the late innings. I saw it last year when Scott Spiezio hit a extra inning homer to win a game after Troy Percival let it get away in the ninth inning before over 40,000 in the Bronx.

The Angels exposed the Yankee staff in the last year’s ALDS and have the upper hand now in 2003.

Aaron Sele who pitched quite well in his last start, but who rarely beats NY in the Bronx, goes today against Jeff Weaver.

At some point NY has to be concerned about the fact that the A’s, Angels, and Mariners can beat the heck out of George’s boys on a regular basis.

I’m on record now saying that the Red Sox will give the Yankees a run for their money this season in the AL East, too.

Ken Griffey Jr is back in the Reds lineup. Other good news for this team that is scoring some serious runs, is Danny Graves finally looks like his arm strength is sufficient to get him past the middle innings. Graves threw 117 pitches and nine shut out innings against the Cards Wednesday to open my eyes.

Click below for the rest of the Dish. The A’s are not hitting. No great news because the A’s have not posted a high team batting average the past few seasons. What the A’s do is get on base, wear pitchers down, and get a timely hit.

Oakland’s on base % is .325, about .015 below where it should be. Once they get the % up watch the runs cross the plate.

Tim Hudson is pitching the best and most inspired ball of his career. As far as his complaining that he is the most unlucky pitcher in the league, he should be thankful he isn’t pitching in Tampa Bay or some other outpost where his numbers would go unnoticed. To those in baseball, Tim Hudson is one of the top righties in the AL, the wins will come big time as long as he continues to pitche this way.

Unless Barry Zito is tagged for the long ball, the A’s should take their eighth straight series tonight against Adam Bernero, who isn’t half bad, and the Tigers.

Freddy Garcia got roped again last night. Cleveland doesn’t hit many righthanders, but they hit Garcia. Not the news Bob Melvin needed.

Can Jim Parque follow up his one hit performance of last week and the Tigers today against the Blue Jays? Doug Davis has pitched two nice games for Toronto so far, the way these two pitch turn off the radar guns, you won’t need them.

Alan Benes against Pedro Martinez, only Pedro’s sore groin can stop the Red Sox express today.

The White Sox can reach .500 behind Bartolo Colon against the Orioles. This has the makings of a close contest. Ponson can help some team that needs pitching, I would be following him very closely if I was Texas.

Miami’s Dontrelle Willis got his first big league win last night. The scouts were absolutely correct about Willises live arm, he is electric on the mound.

Whatever can go wrong, does go wrong for the Mets. Al Leiter has pitched well in Pac Bell Park and faces Kirk Reuter in what looks like a low scoring game tonight. One thing for sure, Art Howe will not let Barry Bonds have a chance to beat him if the game is on the line.

Jeff D’Amico becomes trade bait for Pittsburgh following the brittle righty’s excellent outing against Houston, a team that can hit.

Kevin Brown may be one of the biggest jerks in the game, but he can still pitch: exhibit A, his terrific game against Atlanta last night.

Houston needs to put about five on the board to win this game this morning since Roy Oswalt has been less than perfect. Ok, four since it is the Pirates and Kris Benson.

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks are within 5 and 6 1/2 of the Giants. Anyone think that race is over. One losing streak puts everyone back in the picture.

Happens every year just like that.

sure would be nice to mention that dontrelle willis

is from the bay area and a product of encinal high school in alameda. the same school gave us willie

stargell and jimmy rollins.

as for the a’s. they sure need a big bat in the line-up. Jermmaine Dye will help when he gets

back, but you are in trouble when the hitters in the 7-8 and 9 slots are you outfielders. Too bad the a’s won’t spend money on getting a player who could really help them. Ken Griffey,Jr would really make a difference. He wants out of cincy

and a change of scenery and return to the american league might get him going. just a thought

Good thought about Griffey, Jr. I wrote that last year around June in the Daily Dish and it got a lot of play. I would do it in a heartbeat. Griffey is a legit Hall Of Famer who can hit. His market value is down and I would venture to say that he would come cheap just so Cincy could move him.

Originally, the scouts said Willis didn’t throw hard enough to make it. Once he was traded to Miami from the Cubs his velocity went up and his ball started snaking, he is alocal product and I’m glad to follow his career in the majors.

The A’s suffer from both not being able to hit the ball consistently (for average and in order to manufacture runs) and immaturity in that they seem to rise or sink to the level of their opposition. They play at the Yanks level when they play against the Yanks and lower themselves to the Tigers level when they play the Tigers. Same thing was evident when they faced the Twins in the post season. Granted the Twins played good ball, but the A’s did lower themselves too. No other reason as to why they lost the first game of the playoffs. Just an observation.

They lost because they insisted on using Hudson for two games even though he was hurt. He was clearly not himself. Weather or not he revealed the injury to the coaches at the time, I don’t know. He was having a problem with his hip and even though he said it didn’t affect his pitching it obviously did and that’s why they lost those two games. Susan
