Sunday Morning Muse

A’s and Yankees meet again Sunday in NY.

Some quick observations on the first two games of the series.

These two teams are the deepest teams in the AL.

If they meet in the postseason the matchups of Zito, Hudson, and Mulder versus Clemens, Wells, Pettitte, and Mussina will be outstanding.

Tim Hudson has a great sinker working right now. His ratio of ground ball outs to fly outs is almost 3:1, amazing. He pitched one of the best games of his career Saturday although he didn’t receive the win.

Keith Foulke shouldn’t have pitched the ninth inning with Johnson, Giambi, and Williams due up. All either hit lefthanded or need to be turned around to the right side, Ricardo Rincon should face the Yankees in the ninth if the lefties are coming up. The A’s let the Yankees off the mat Saturday and were fortunate to win the game.

George Steinbrenner could care less about Miguel Tejada. He wants Eric Chavez, Barry Zito, and Mark Mulder. Seeing Chavez homer in the tenth only made The Boss realize Chavez is his next super star free agent in waiting.

Wait until he sees Zito Sunday.

Click read more for more!Ted Lilly acquited himself very well in his start Friday night and the A’s should not be afraid to start him against NY in October, if necessary.

Ted Lilly throws too many fly balls which end up in the seats, he should throw more sinkers and less curves.

The Giambi brothers are hitting a combined .340 (.140, Jeremy plus .200, Jason), they claim they don’t hit well in cold weather, guess what guys, you signed to play in the East, try wearing long sleeves. It will help.

John Smoltz was scored upon two nights in a row, see he is human after all.

The Phillies are winning without much hitting from Jim Thome, Pat Burrell, or David Bell. This doesn’t bode well for the rest of the East since these three will hit.

Barry Zito versus Roger Clemens, Cy Young versus Cy Old. An old joke, but it works here.

Astros sent Jeroime Robertson back to the minors, now we have Kirk Saarloos to kick around in his place. Keep your eyes on Lige in their pen, he is lights out.

Roy Oswalt and Wade Miller haven’t come close to last years performance, it has to be a concern to Jimy Williams in Houston.

Ken Griffey will be traded over the next winter, you can count on it.

Seattle is looking more formidable in the AL West. Gil Meche goes against Bartolo Colon on Sunday night ESPN. Mike Cameron is going bonkers in Comiskey this weekend on the one year anniversary of his four homer game in Chicago. The Seattle pen looks pretty good with Rafael Soriano in it.

How do you figure that to happen, when Cameron has trouble making contact for the first month of the season.

All of a sudden Jeff D’Amico has thrown deep in the game for Pittsburgh. If only the Pirates could hit, they could play .500 which would be an improvement.

Willie McCovey gets his statue unveiled tomorrow in McCovey Cove outside Pac Bell Park. Where is Marichal’s likeness at PBP?

The Braves have put together a winning pen, at least for May. Roberto Hernandez can set up, he did it for Rod Beck and was pretty good in ’97.

Speaking of Rod Beck is he still in AAA with the Iowa Cubs?

Antonio Alfonseca will have to win the closers job back from Joe Borowski when the six fingered former Marlin returns from the DL. Dusty Baker needs Alfonseca’s arm in the late innings, but not as the automatic ninth inning guy.

If Texas only had some pitching!

Javier Vazquez and Matt Morris, this has to be a low scoring game in St. Louis, right?

What happened to the A’s hit and running, bunting and their new offense? The Yankees will scratch and claw for the first run of the game, a lesson the A’s should learn instead of sitting back and waiting for the big hit which may not come. Oakland had 11 hits off Jeff Weaver Saturday, who averages more than one hit given up per inning, and could only score three times, not acceptable if you want to beat NY.

Matt Kinney may win the series for Milwaukee over Al Leiter and the Mets. Kinney has thrown extremely well lately.

St. Louis is 2-7 in one run games thanks to its nonexistent closing staff.

Eric Gagne is the new Mr. Automatic save.

Is anyone connected to baseball in favor of the idea that awards the league that wins the all star game the extra game during the world series. Everyone I talk to is against it, so why did it pass? Seriously, does TV really control the game that much?

By next weeks Sunday Muse, will the Royals still be a Cinderella story? Seems like midnight is fast approaching for the Royals.

The Yankees lead the AL in just about every offensive category, the A’s lead the AL in pitching. With Barry Zito on the hill, the A’s will take the rubber game from NY, that is if Zito goes at least seven innings.

Forget Chad Bradford Sunday if you root for the A’s. It’s Zito to Mecir to Rincon, and let’s go home.

See you next Sunday for the Muse.
