Baseball Rumors
Heard a good rumor today about the A’s, tell me what you think.
A’s will trade Scott Hatteberg and Eric Byrnes to the Brewers for Junior Spivey, then sign Travis Lee to play first base. Spivey would play second with Mark Ellis shifting over to short as the A’s break Bobby Crosby in.
Click below and I’ll give you my take.
I love the move if the A’s could pull it off. Travis Lee is an excellent fielding firstbaseman who can play first as well as JT Snow of the Giants and that says something.
Spivey can hit with power, play second or third and would be a valuable man to have in the clubhouse.
Ellis would take the pressure off Crosby and also will mask some of his (Ellis) offensive shortcomings if he helped break Crosby in.
Is Sidney Ponson ever going to sign with some team? White Sox offered arbitration to Scott Schoenweiss at the last minute which could mean they are out of the running for Ponson. Loiaza, Buerhle, Rauch, and Wright don’t scare me if that is what is left of their rotation.
Ponson has Texas written all over him.
Pretty quiet lately, too quiet in Boston and Texas.
Robby Alomar doesn’t have much left, but is better than what Arizona had planned for second base.
Juan Gonzalez is a Royal, KC might be better than the White Sox right now.
Jeff Cirillo is a Padre, now if San Diego got a top of the rotation starter or two, then you could take them seriously. The sigh of relief you heard came from both San Diego and Seattle who unloaded three players nobody wanted: Cirillo, Kevin Jarvis, and Wikki Gonzalez.
If Rich Aurilia signs with Seattle tomorrow, then Carlos Guillen will be a Tiger five minutes later.
I’ll say it again, the Giants are waiting for Greg Maddux.
Glad Frank Menechino is back with the A’s. He can hit with some power and is best friends with Mulder, Chavez, Hudson, and Ellis. Good for morale too.
Derrick Turnbow got busted for steroids, must explain how he throws 100 MPH. Angel bullpen is very scary and the strength of the team.
Mets are thinking big if they get in the Vlad sweepstakes. I say Vlad and his folks are waiting for the Dodgers deal to go down before doing anything. His wavering must make the Orioles feel great as they have 65 million on the table.
The Yankees don’t have a lefty in the rotation, a sure sign of trouble. Mussina, Vazquez, Brown, Contreras, and Lieber go against what has worked in Yankee Stadium during the winning years.
Another sign of the dynasty crumbling in the Bronx: Tony Clark at backing up Giambi at first base instead of Travis
Lee.
As bad as the A’s want to get rid of Jermaine Dye maybe the Dodgers would take him if the A’s kicked in 6 million, if the Bums would toss Paul Lo Duca in for good measure, I like it.
The more Pete Rose talks the worse it gets. If he isn’t careful, the writers will rebel and blackball him from the HOF vote. Pete back in baseball, no chance. He just doesn’t get what he did.

About the potential trade, you already know what I’m going to say. I agree with you. Man, that’d be a sweet deal if Beane could pull it off. Acquiring Lee and Spivey would really improve the team. I’d go so far to say that it’s a better team, at least on paper, than last year’s. I can’t believe the Brewers would be dumb enough to want Hatteberg. Beane better make up for the mistake in signing him and do it while he can.
While I realize it’s good to have Menechino around, I’m surprised he wanted to stay. Macha hardly used him at all. I think Frankie should have played more at 2nd in relief of Ellis, personally. Ellis was probably tired a lot of the time from playing every day. Guess Frankie is comfortable with being the clubhouse clown?

As for pete rose, his on the field exploits as a player
are certainly worthy of the hall of fame. his betting as a manager and lying about the gambling will keep him out. One commentator pointed out that when he didn’t bet on the reds it was the same as betting against
his own team. He knew which pitchers were tired. He
knew what players were hurt. when he didn’t bet for his team the gamblers knew what was going on.
Marty sasy rose doesn’t get it. he is right. it’s the same rationale used by the croc hunter when he held his infant son while feeding a croc and then was outraged at the outrage from the public.

Based off some of the number crunchers on the A’s board, the Lee/Spivey deal would add an additional 2-3 million dollars to the A’s payroll which is already maxed out. Would the A’s have to make room somewhere else? Get rid of someone? Just do it, Schott! You need to spend money to make it.

great article big guy! The A’s still need another established hitter in the middle of their lineup. Though it would be nice to say goodbye to Jermaine Dye and get Junior Spivey’s pop at the top of the lineup you are still relying a lot on Chavez to be the biggest offensive threat, offsetting the loss of Tejeda’s bat. I’ve always liked La Duca for his discipline at the plate and control of the bat. If you put him in the mix I like the lineup a lot more.

As with Mike, you know how I feel about Hatteberg. However, I have to agree that Spivey/Lee would be an improvement to the team.
My only question would be does this make us still too lopsided in lefty hitters? Maybe instead of Lee we sign Ellis Burks or Eric Karros and sacrifice defense for RH power at first base.

I personally don’t know if the A’s will pull off this specific trade (although it would be nice), but I am confident that Beane will trade for a “filler” option at shortstop. Everyone seems set on Crosby opening at short. Think again. He’s not ready, and Beane knows it. He’s not ready skill wise yet, and certainly not ready mentally to step in and be a leader of this team. He’s just too inexperienced. I would be extremely surprised if our opening day shortstop is Bobby Crosby.—Ned
Some other options at shortstop are available free agents Mark Mclemore, Tony Womack, and maybe Rey Ordonez. McLemore can play anywhere, IF or OF, and can contribute in the lineup.
Spivey is very interesting, and Lee would be terrific — can’t understand why Lee is still on the FA market
it is absolutely critical that a soft offensice team be solid up the middle– with new catching and with a new CF. the SS-2B combo must be rock solid.
The A’s suck and bascially every team in the league except for the White Sox are going to loose whether they like it or not. They don’t have a choice, now with the aquistion of Javier Vazquez it will not even be a competition between any other teams. The Sox will role and no one wll be able to stop them. They are destined for not just a repeat but a ten-peat. So start talkinga bout a real baseball team the Sox and not the suckky A’s with their gay g.m. Billy Bean.
