Daily Dish: You Can Now Follow Me on Twitter
Yes I've gone high tech ..I'm on twitter.com as baseballmarty...the nickname given to me by Seattle broadcaster Rick Rizzs based on former Mariner infielder Marty Martinez.
I use twitter to give quick thoughts on the game and baseball in general..it's cool and fun for me to give these brief shouts.
thanks, Marty

Daily Dish: Excellent A's Season Tickets Available
Mike Medeiros of WholesaleautosRus a long time sponsor of my shows and a good friend has two A's season tickets available in section 117 eight (8) rows back from the screen directly behind home plate to sell.
I sit in those seats quite often and if you have seen me there you know Shooty Babitt uusally sits one row in front of me...these are great seats and will go quickly...please give Mike a call if you are interested at 1-888-275- 5300....or Mike's cell phone 510 386 6917.
Great move getting Carney Lansford back in Oakland as part of the A's Comcast pre and post game shows...Carnac is one of the genuine people in the game and will be terrific analyzing the ball club...now if they will just let some of the veterans like Carney be spring training instructors things will look up very quickly...imagine Ray Fosse working with the catchers and going over his thoughts on how to call a game..priceless information..Marty

Daily Dish: McGwire and Selig
Two names in the news recently.
Tony La Russa suggested and I assume kiddingly that Mark McGwire might pinch hit in September for the Cards.
It might be a nice one game stunt and prolong McGwire's time on the Hall of Fame ballot, delaying the expiration of his 15 year period of eligibility (he has already used at least three maybe four years) for an additional 12years beginning in 2015.
Seriously, would you take up a roster spot for a player who can't get around on a decent fastball which he would be sure to face. Even if he got a gift hit, how many times do you think he could do that in a real game?
If you just consider McGwire's home run totals against other alleged steroid users he is one of the most dominant power hitters of his era thus a hall of famer. If you want to dilute his numbers because of PED and then match him against the greatest of all time he isn't worthy.
In any case his reign as one of the greatest to play the game isn't significant enough for me to vote for him if I had a vote. Can you write the history of his era without including his baseball story? Probably not and that is a case for his inclusion..kind of like a Dizzy Dean who dominated for 5-6 years before hurting his arm.
These contradictions are the basis for debate about McGwire's worthiness for the HOF.
This publicity stunt diminishes McGwire's staus as one of the best power hitters of all time instead of adding to his mystiqiue. Maybe Minnie Minoso can get an at bat for St. Louis this fall..he's only 80 or so...The Cards manager should worry more about who his third basman will be and pray that Matt Holliday lives up to his contract than hyping his his new hitting coach.

Daily Dish: A's Sign Jack Cust
I like Jack Cust. He is one of the most approachable players on the ball club. Jack lives in my neighborhood....just up the block from me. Jack can hit the ball out of the park. He will lead the club in home runs in 2010. The A's will never be a playoff team with Jack as their leading home run hitter. Jack will be the DH. If Jack hits higher than sixth in the order it won't be a good sign.
Jake Fox should split time with Cust as the DH. Where does that leave the A's former slugger Eric Chavez? Sean Doolittle is he healthy?
With Cust around don't expect to see Chris Carter this season. The only way Carter comes up is if Daric Barton hits around .220 again.
Are the A's done tinkering... probably not as no one really has a grip on how close the A's top prospects are to being ready. Once we know that answer Scott Hairston will go quicker than you can say Rajai Davis.
The A's are overloaded with outfielders. I saw Travis Buck today. Always up beat I still think he is one of the most marketable players the A's have to offer, but where does he fit into the outfield? Buck should be dealt to Seattle where he can compete with Ryan Langerhans for a back up outfield slot.
Casey Kotchman is going to Seattle as its first baseman meaning Russell Branyan priced himself off the Mariner roster.
Folks tell me Justin Duchscherer appears to be a new man. Good news for him and the team.
I'm pushing for someone to step up and sign Hank Blalock. I think he can hit.
Ever think how Matt Holliday's winter would have turned out if the A's had dealt him to a team other than the Cardinals? Hitting .353 for St. Louis, a club that had the best hitter in baseball helping him in the line up over the last 12 weeks of the season, allowed Holliday to score a 120 million dollar contract. If you saw him play in Oakland you wouldn't have believed that Holliday could have saved his free agent season.
I'm not surprised Holliday went back to the NL. He was an awful AL player.
In any case it will be good to see Jack around the neighborhood next summer.

Daily Dish: Rory Markas Angels Broadcaster Passes Away
Rory Markas was a very enthusiastic professional play by play voice of the Angels. He teamed with Terry Smith giving the Halos a top notch radio team.
Rory died suddenly on Monday January 4th. Last winter (Nov. '08) he had a severe medical problem (blod clot on the brain) that he overcame and was back in the booth at full strength for the 2009 season.
Rory was a guest on Right Off The Bat on July 17th and that segment can be heard through our archives or by typing in (Rory Markus) into the search window. Note the misspelling of his name on our site (sorry)...
He will be missed...he was a good friend to me and never turned down a request to talk about the game.

Daily Dish: 2010 Is Finally Here
Glad to be back..this winter thing for me is getting old.
The A's and the Giants have been in the news.
The Giants still could use a left handed hitting first baseman. Adam LaRoche has been mentioned. His history has been awful until about July then he hits like crazy for the last half of the year. I would seriously consider Hank Blalock. He has power to right field, has a desire to recapture his career and won't cost an arm and leg.
The Giants need a legitimate left fielder who can get on base. Johnny Damon would be a good choice. Once Damon adjusted to life in Oakland he was a very fine player. How about Reed Johnson? He busts his butt on the field, can lead off, and is a veteran who has something left in the tank.
Mark DeRosa is a journeyman who can play numerous positions. He won't protect the clean up hitter and is susceptible to injuries. He is great in the clubhouse, but doesn't hit enough for me to really make a difference in the line up. Nice player, but a contributor not a carrier.
Juan Uribe can hit in AT&T Park..he can reach the seats, but can he play a full season? If Uribe and DeRosa combine for 35 home runs, I would consider that a success, but this club hasn't replaced Bengie Molina's clutch homers and RBIs so far.

Daily Dish: Lester Rodney Passes Away..Key Man in Baseball's History
--------------------------------------------------------------------- Friday, December 25, 2009 (SF Chronicle) Lester Rodney dies, helped break color barrier Jack Epstein, Chronicle Staff Writer
Lester Rodney, a sportswriter in the 1930s and 1940s who helped break the color ban in baseball, died Sunday. He was 98 and had been living in a retirement community in Walnut Creek. He died of natural causes, said his son, Ray Rodney of Fairfax. As a reporter, columnist and sports editor for the Daily Worker, the New York Communist Party newspaper, Mr. Rodney made ending Jim Crow baseball his signature issue, hammering baseball officials year after year to end what he called "the crime of the big leagues." Mr. Rodney, the grandson of Jewish immigrants, began his journalism career writing sports stories for his high school newspaper in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn. He received an athletic scholarship to run track at Syracuse University but had to turn it down after the 1929 stock market crash, when his father lost the family's home and silk factory business. He then took night courses at New York University while working a series of odd jobs, including pumping gas and driving a wealthy family around town. Lester was one of my special interviews..please type his name in the search box and you can listen to that interview...click below for the remainder of his obituary. Marty

Daily Dish: Playoffs Are Wide Open
Batter Up Oct 4th, 2009
Playoff baseball is here. The weather has that chill we feel each October meaning it’s time to start major league baseball’s post season party. Teams play 162 games to determine the right to go to the tournament which covers three rounds and potentially 19 games between the participants. This year all the teams have qualified except the winner of the AL Central where Detroit’s bats have gone into early winter hibernation potentially allowing the Minnesota Twins a chance to extend their home love affair with the Metrodome. If a playoff is needed to decide the division race the Twins current domed ball park which will be replaced next season with open-air Target Field will be the site of the one game playoff on Tuesday. (Written on Sunday Oct. 4th..Twins are now in) Click below for more!

Daily Dish: All Playoff Teams Have A Carrier
Batter Up September 27th, 2009 As the playoff picture solidifies in the waning days of the season, it is time to take a look at a premise we suggested earlier in the year: Do the top teams have the carriers, the players who put up outstanding offensive numbers while leading their ball club to October baseball? Let’s look at the NL’s playoff contenders and see if each has at least one true carrier. Click below for more!

Daily Dish: Who Will Bounce Back in 2010?
Batter Up September 20th, 2009
September baseball represents many things on the diamond.
The teams vie for the playoffs. MVPs are crowned. Cy Young award winners cement their credentials. Young players are called up to the big leagues to show what they can do in the majors.
It’s also a time for major league teams to evaluate the future of veteran players who have had sub-par seasons.
Is a bad season an aberration for a player? Is a poor year a sign that a career is on downside?
Let’s take a look at 25 players who have stumbled during the 2009 season and examine what their prospects are for a bounce back season in 2010.
Vladimir Guerrero Angels: Guerrero suffered injuries that curtailed his playing time early in the year. Since coming back the Angels DH has been les than spectacular hitting .297 with 15 home runs. Guerrero is not the threat of year’s past, but if healthy he can still hit with power. Guerrero can help a contender next season. Click below for more!
