Inside the Press Box: Fremont: Still have two strikes left
Posted on Monday, January 18 @ 18:23:28 CST by marty
maury writes "The City of Fremont, California, swung and missed on the first possible location for the Oakland Athletics, the new proposed stardium Cisco Field, by highway 880 at the Auto Park Mall exit, but now there is another possibility for the Athletics to move down to Fremont.
Click below for the story....
The fight for the Athletics continues, currently three Bay Area cities are involved, Oakland, San José and Fremont. Yes, Fremont for the second time around.
Fremont made its pitch to a Major League Baseball task force which is currently exploring the possible location for the Athletics here in Northern California. A decision is expected by the end of January or early February.
Fred Díaz, Fremont City Manager said: "May the best city win".
The Oakland Athletics where ready to move to Fremont, but on Feburary 2008 owner Lew Wolff withdrew his plan to build the new A'S stadium and "baseball village" at Auto Park Mall, because of community opposition, primarly because of traffic. Anyplace a ballpark is located, there will be traffic, unless the A'S relocate to Coalinga.
The only automobile car plant west of the Mississippi is about to close its doors this April 1 here in Fremont. The NUMMI plant(a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors)is scheduled to close it's doors this April and lay off close to 5,000 workers. Now, the City of Fremont hopes to purchase the property (where NUMMI has its plant) with redevelopment funds. The site is 370 acres(for those that like comparisons; the Giants ATT Ballpark rest on only 14 acres of land)this land next to higway 880 is a better location actually, than the Cisco Park site at Auto Mall Parkway. BART is working on an extension to Warm Springs, which will be very close to this new proposed site.
So here we go again. Fremont has one strike, but still has at least two more pitches left to hit a home run or strike out. This reporter who has lived in Fremont since 1979 likes Fremont chances. Why not? Do you know what's going to happen? If you do, you must also be ready to guess the Lotto numbers. When it comes to ballparks you know how unpredictable is the Bay Area.
The City of Oakland in December, proposed three potential sites for the A'S, one at Jack London Square. I think Oakland has only one strike left.
The Giants own territorial rights in Santa Clara County, San José, and that could see some litigation in the future if the Giants want to continue to play hardball with the A'S in the South Bay. Oakland has it share of problems with finance and crime and all the problems that cities like Oakland are encountering during this soft economy.
Fremont might still be the most viable place for the Oakland Athletics. This will be the second try and it seems this time the people that support the move to Fremont, here in Fremont, are much more organized. Nina Moore of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce is expecting a big crowd the 25th of January at the Saddle Rack, a country western night club not to far from the new proposed NUMMI location. off of Auto Mall Parkway. All are invited!
Fremont with 210,000 residents(prior to the Census later this year)is suburbia located just 20 miles south of Oakland and 15 miles south-east of San José, therefore geografically "in the middle".
And literally Fremont is also in the middle of things again! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Oakland A'S will broadcast all their games in Spanish language again this 2010 on KDIA 1640AM and KDYA 1190AM, a production of SBN-Spanish Béisbol Network. Which also produces Boston, Philadelphia, Washington among other Major League teams."
