Daily Dish: McGwire and Selig
Posted on Friday, January 08 @ 09:38:52 CST by marty
Two names in the news recently.
Tony La Russa suggested and I assume kiddingly that Mark McGwire might pinch hit in September for the Cards.
It might be a nice one game stunt and prolong McGwire's time on the Hall of Fame ballot, delaying the expiration of his 15 year period of eligibility (he has already used at least three maybe four years) for an additional 12years beginning in 2015.
Seriously, would you take up a roster spot for a player who can't get around on a decent fastball which he would be sure to face. Even if he got a gift hit, how many times do you think he could do that in a real game?
If you just consider McGwire's home run totals against other alleged steroid users he is one of the most dominant power hitters of his era thus a hall of famer. If you want to dilute his numbers because of PED and then match him against the greatest of all time he isn't worthy.
In any case his reign as one of the greatest to play the game isn't significant enough for me to vote for him if I had a vote. Can you write the history of his era without including his baseball story? Probably not and that is a case for his inclusion..kind of like a Dizzy Dean who dominated for 5-6 years before hurting his arm.
These contradictions are the basis for debate about McGwire's worthiness for the HOF.
This publicity stunt diminishes McGwire's staus as one of the best power hitters of all time instead of adding to his mystiqiue. Maybe Minnie Minoso can get an at bat for St. Louis this fall..he's only 80 or so...The Cards manager should worry more about who his third basman will be and pray that Matt Holliday lives up to his contract than hyping his his new hitting coach.

Bud Selig wants to match the world series winners of MLB and Japan in a showdown global world series.
When does he propose do play those games? Nice television for Thanksgiving or Xmas. He must be kidding but probably isn't.
The Commish should be more concerned about the franchises in financial trouble who are pocketing the revenue checks and not reaching out to their paying customers by building their farm systems or major league rosters before extending the season which runs too long anyway.
Add Vladimir Guerrero to the list of players who will be a bargain for some team. Would you rather watch Coco Crisp and Jack Cust play this year or see Guerrero hit when you watch a future A's game?
Jason Giambi was a disaster last year in that role for Oakland. I don't think Guerrero has sunk that low just yet.
How dumb was Jason Bay to sign with the Mets instead of Boston? In Fenway Park, Bay is guaranteed to hit 35 home runs. In the Mets spacious park he will be lucky to hit 20. For just about the same money he could have become another New England icon, but chose to play the market and got stuck with a dysfunctional franchise.
